Hacking Where do I start?

Hi, my son has just started playing with his 3ds again and wants the latest "stuff" . Now I haven't touched his 3ds for over a year now , it is on 4.5 I believe and I think it was spoofed or whatever it's called to 9.2 I believe . I read around the forum and see the scene has progressed a lot since and I'm little bit overwhelmed by it all . If one of you good people could point me in the right direction of what to do next it would be greatly appreciated . He has the gateway card for backups at the moment .

Spoiler: My guess is

Being on 4.5 the guide will guide you to update to 9.2, downgrade to 2.1, a9lh it, recover 9.2 and then update to latest version in a very easy to follow way. Backup everything twice, follow every step and you should be fine.
