Hacking When will Gateway 3DS start playing multiple games on a microchip?

Now I know not everyone pirates but I can't help but feel like this is a dilemma of help, my free games aren't convenient enough. I mean 4GB MicroSD cards are cheap and having to switch them out is no different minus the save problem than swapping actual carts.

It's actually a lot more convenient. Mainly because the sd cards are a lot smaller, but also the games are free. So a gateway really is worth it.

Yeah, it's pretty cool. While it would nice to hope that an alternative comes out in the future that allows multiple games per cart I'm not so sure. I mean the Gateway as it stands right now has to use Nintendo's own code, probably patched to run a game. I think it'll take an entirely different exploit to allow for actual custom code execution like a loader menu to work.

Actually no. Others have used the gateway entry point to launch very basic homebrew. I would say get a gateway and kick back and watch how the scene develops.

Not really, it kinda has been shown as a necessity since every previous ROM loader for the DS has had one included with it. Though, this is the FIRST ROM loader for the 3DS, and I'm sure the first DS one was similar.

That being said, I guarantee we'll get something like this in the future. It will become "standard" eventually.

You must not have owned the DSTWO long enough to notice. It used to have constant updates that changed what title it shows as. It's been pretty stable for a while, since their newest exploit loads from a file on the MicroSD card, so they can just update that if Nintendo blocks it. I'm not 100$ sure how their exploit works, but I'm guessing the current game it shows up as is white-listed (you know, so people who own the retail copy can play it), and the Supercard team just changes tiny details about the cart if it gets blocked (like, say, the serial number? I dunno)

The point is why not just buy the games than get all these memory cards, sure the cost is cheaper but it's really adding lots of costs and inconveniences. At that point why not support the developers instead of hackers.

No one is demanding any features, but stop pretending like it's not a huge disadvantage to using the card. There is nothing wrong with pointing out a negative about a product.

i've never even heard of the game that my cart comes up as... is it just a rare game that's not made anymore?

He obviously is just a detractor.....I mean it is no problem at all. I used a numbering system and then printed a label and put it on the SD card case. It takes about 60 seconds to print a new label and tape it on if I change my game cards....he acts like buying a $6 MicroSD card is the same as a $40 game but when you are done with the game you just overwrite the flash card at no additional cost, meanwhile when you are done with the game you trade it for $10 at gamestop and buy another one for $40.......yeah no difference.

The super easy way to do this is to partition SD cards. I'm assuming a partition table would be required and limiting to 4 partitions maximum on a single SD card. If logical partitions can be used similar to a HDD, the sky is the limit. I vaguely remember the PS3 used a work-around for this on the DEV boxes for newer games. Maybe some similar trick can be used for the 3DS. Having said that, four 2GB games on an 8GB SD card isn't all bad...

The homebrew function would be to index the roms loaded to the separate partitions. I would only be speculating at how this would be done... Maybe loading a config file to the SD card internal to the 3DS for the microSD partition table inserted.. IF the gateway can identify serials on microSD cards those could be locked to the partitions and game titles on that card. The homebrew then has to 'reset' the gateway with it being told the new offset to load the microSD from.

Crude implementation but would be better than nothing. I don't see a way anyone but gateway could implement this due to lack of documentation on how the gateway loads from a microSD. If they can't get homebrew to pre-load, maybe they can just use holding buttons on boot. like the directional pad. You'd have to remember that down was title A and up was title B, but quick crude gui-less working implementation for those who really want it. If you don't press any buttons it defaults to the first/only partition.

I recommended something similiar but instead just recomended having a pc tool that stitched together the ROM images into a single file that you would then write to the microSD with winimage as a raw image....then thru either a gui or a button press trick (probably a lot easier as you would not have to develop an interface) you would just reset the pointer to the adress the selected rom resided at....same thought in that you put an index file with the rom start adresses in the raw file.

The 'gateway' crew seems pretty slick and I am sure they are thinking of ways to do this as they know multi-rom is a huge feature....my guess is they are working on nand save (AC) and AP tricks (like MH4 implemented) first as we are now likely to see more of those methods used so they have good reason to work to overcome them. One way or another we are going to get to unsigned code running eventually and rom decryption and such will follow so at some point we will have multi-rom, rom patching, and all that on 4.5fw atleast. Once Pandora's box is opened I have never seen it closed again in 30+ years of being a gamer.
