What to do with a cheap PC !

well i was recently in a computer show and i bought a refurbished pc FOR 80 bucks !!!!!!! and its pretty nice here are the specs

Compaq EVO D300
Intel Celeron 1.3GHz
256MB DDR Memory
20GB IDE Hard Drive
CD-ROM
10/100 LAN Ethernet Networking and Internet
Professionally refurbished at our facility
4 USB Ports
Floppy Drive
Windows XP Professional Pre-Installed and Certificate of Authenticity included on bottom of machine
Office Suite also preinstalled (Open Office) (compatible with Microsoft Office)
PS2, keyboard ports, and video output

now the thing is this i wanna see if i can turn this PC into a semi decent gaming rig !!!!!!!!!!!!! lol its socket 478 what do you guys think ?


im thinkign getting a cheap 478 CPU 1 gig of ram and maybe a 7600 gs ?

it depends on how good a cpu you get, and you said nothing about a graphics card, 1gb of ram is ok, but as of right now you can play older games, since most need more then 256mb of ram to play.

Good luck getting it to "gaming rig" status, you're going to spend more money than its worth to even get close to that mark. Not to mention the outdated standards and shoddy Compaq parts, you've bought $80 worth of headaches!

check the cpu support the evo series, looks like early p4 generation
prescott based cpu needs compatible boards.

i dont know with a limited 250 watt PSU i dont think i can add a 7600 gs lol

i really wanted to turn this into a comand and conquer 3 box

I dismantled one of those lugabouts once, just to find the hamster that it ran on. But it was much larger than that one in the picture and damn was it heavy.

MythTV is good enough for your stuff. It combiçnes the media center, MAME cabinet, and it runs on linux, so your hardware will feel rejuvenated. (try beryl on a 1GHZ PC with 256 megs of ram and an old 3D card => happiness)
