It means that you can definitely update it to 5.03 and hack it.

Whether the hack is permanent (not lost when turned off) or temporary (need to re-hack when you turn it on) we can't tell, but you can definitely do a 5.x hack and get proper emulation on it.

Be sure to check out the FAQ and then the softmod sticky when you get the PSP, and enjoy using it.

So I would have to update the firmware to version 5.03 when I got it, and then I could hack it?
It sucks that it is nearly impossible to tell which motherboard a psp uses, without owning it already yourself. This mean that I would have to go out on a limb and just buy this thing without knowing for sure if it is hackable or semi hackable. I'm not really sure if I'm willing to take the risk without knowing for sure.

She said that she would take $50 for the system and the 4 games (which I would sell). What do you think... should I take the risk and buy it?

I have "want to buy video games/systems" ad in a local free newspaper. I got a call today from someone looking to get rid of a PSP (I'm not sure what model, but she said it was grey) and 6 games for $60, but I'm pretty sure she would take less (I'm considering offering $40). I told her I would think about it and call back tomorrow.
The only thing I want this for is to emulate old systems. I'm mostly interested in NES,SNES,Genesis,N64. How well does the PSP run those systems? How exactly do you run homebrew on a PSP? Do they use a flashcard?
Can the PSP run homebrew that can do things that the DSiXL can't?

It has a PSX emu, an N64 emu, and even a Dreamcast emu (but that one is more of a proof of concept than anything). I think it also has a GBA emu.

This doesn't undo the hack. It only gets undone if you hold the switch to shut the PSP fully off, or if it loses all battery power and shuts off. Also if you've never used a PSP, you can just press the home button in-game and choose to exit it (some emulators have a replacement exit button/function), and it'll return to the main menu sithout shuttind down or losing the hack.

It's not nearly as much of a problem as you may think.

Are you kidding me? That's not a risk at all. Most people would pay double that in a heartbeat for just the system. Hell, I payed $150 for my system, though it came with some extras I wanted like component video-out cables. The system retails for like $170, and the new ones being sold can't use the better hacks that one can.

If she had advertised it as what it is (an older PSP running a 4.x firmware) she could charge $80 and it'd likely already have been sold to somebody looking to hack it and resell it for $120.

Thanks for another great reply! I've never even touched a PSP before (Nintendo for life!!!), but I'm interested in picking one up for the superior NES and SNES emulation.
I wasn't sure what being semi hackable means. I guess keeping it in sleep mode all the time isn't all that bad (as long as it isn't bad for the system itself).
I called her today and said I would be picking it up on Monday, so that gives me time to do some research and figure things out before I pick it up.

Thanks again for all of your help, and for being patient with me.

I got a call from someone else today looking to get rid of a mint condition PSP 1000. The only problem is the he updated the firmware to 6.37. Can this thing be hacked? If it can, to what state can it be hacked (fully, semi, even worse)?

You WILL need a pandora battery, but once you have that you can fully hack it.

The 1000s have less memory than the 2000s or 3000s, but it only effects some homebrew. PSP game playing will work just fine.

Ok. So you're saying that once I get a Pandora battery that it could be shut off and turned back on without needing to have the hack redone?

All I want this for is to emulate NES/SNES/Genesis, not for playing PSP games. Will it be able to do that stuff?

Well, from what I've heard from my parents, he had a seizure last night, perhaps an epileptic episode, fucking died, had a near death experience, my dad called the paramedics, they showed up, took him to the hospital, and he woke up covered in tubes, and started complaining.
