So I want to edit my Monster Hunter Generations save file to give my palicos a couple of skills I want. For that I need to get the save file (obviously).

I went to look about installing homebrew and I don't think I can.
I am using an old 3DS XL on firmware 11.7

I was going to use Steelhax, I even downloaded everything, including Steel Diver: Sub Wars and made a nintendo ID for this 3DS (i never had one before since this is my old DS that I transferred everything from).
When I went to try it it never worked then I found out it's because Steelhax is a secondary exploit...

I have none of the primary entrypoints.
So what are my options? All I want to do is edit my save to give a few skills to my cats! Why they gotta be encrypted....

This guide should help you install homebrew via CFW: https://3ds.hacks.guide/

Probably the cheapest method is to do the DSIware method, $2, after installing CFW you get access to userland homebrew.

The ntrboot and boot9strap (DSIWare) methods are not an option for me. I don't have, nor intend to buy a flashcart and I don't want to put funds on this 3DS since it's not my main system.

For the boot9strap (Hardmod) method, what does soldering mean? Does it mean actual solder? or is it just a term I am unfamiliar with?
If it does require actual soldering, that is not an option since I do not own a soldering iron, neither would I want to use one for this.

If that is the case for the last one, then does that mean I am out of luck with no way to install it what so ever?

If you can´t use one of the three currently available methods for CFW installation, you are out of options.

Hard mod is soldering wires to the board to allow you to be able to restore a nand using win32discimager

you can get free homebrew using this https://gbatemp.net/threads/steelminer-jpn-free-cfw-us-eu-jp-free-homebrew.506166/

What gave you that idea?

There is an installer for Steelhax that works as a secondary exploit, but it also works as a primary exploit if you use SteelMiner to brute-force your movable.sed.
