For the Gateway 3DS, is there any recommended sd card class? I know on the NDS, initially the recommended class was 6. Was wondering if that was the same, or if there was a general consensus on the class for the card.

Generally faster is better. I've had minor lag in some games with a Class 4 on my NDS, so I personally wouldn't want lower than a 6 for 3ds, with 8 being preffered. Then again, I don't know what the bandwidth is on the 3dscart itself to know if it would be a bottleneck at any point.

I've been able to run multiple games on a class 2 MicroSD card without any issues. Though, I did buy two class 10 MicroSD cards (SanDisk Ultra 8GB) for most of my Gateway usage.

Out of boredom I've compared the loadtimes of a few games from a noname class 2 and a transcend class 10 (no u) with a stopwatch. I wasn't able to measure any significant difference.

However there are noticeable differences in write speed on the computer, writing a game to the class 2 takes 4 times longer than to the class 10. Granted, in a typical use case scenario the gateway microSD is way more often read than written to, but as faster cards aren't that much more expensive I'm more than willing on spending a few extra bucks. Especially as I will most likely still be able to use those faster cards a few years down the road when the gateway and(or the 3DS went the way of the dodo.

Pretty much echoing what's been mostly said in this thread, there is no notable benefit to using higher class micro SD card for 3DS ROMs.

Makes sense since SD class numbers are only based on write speed, not read speed.

True, by the SD standard the SD class ratings only guarantee minimum sustainable write speeds. But empirical evidence (I don't have any tangible numbers at the moment but did a few benchmarks some time ago) shows that read speed correlates with write speed. See for example http://www.wired.com/reviews/2013/12/highlow-sd-cards/ .

@Jayro, I don't see whats so special about the DS ML, its just a DS lite in a phat shell. At least the phat model had louder speakers, whereas the lite has a much better screen.

They probably said "Hey, why not we combine the two together and make a 'new' DS to sell".

It's a DS Lite in a slightly bigger DS Lite shell.

    It's not a Nintendo / iQue official product, it's a 3rd party custom.

Nothing special about it other than it's more comfortable than the Lite

@SylverReZ if you could find a v5 DS ML you would have the best of both worlds since the v5 units had the same backlight brightness levels as the DS Lite unlockable with flashme

A woman with no arms and no legs was sitting on a beach. A man comes along and the woman says, "I've never been hugged before." So the man feels bad and hugs her. She says "Well i've also never been kissed before." So he gives her a kiss on the cheek. She says "Well I've also never been fucked before." So the man picks her up, and throws her in the ocean and says "Now you're fucked."

anyways, we need to re-normalize physical media

if i didn't want my games to be permanent, then i'd rent them

Agreed, that why I try to buy all my games on disc, Xbox anyways. Switch games (which I pirate tbh) don't matter much, I stay offline 24/7 anyways.
  • AncientBoi @ AncientBoi:
    I don't pirate them, I Use Them :mellow:. Like I do @BigOnYa 's couch :tpi::evil::rofl2:

@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM
  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60

    :rofl2:
  • cearp @ cearp:
still, I agree physical media is nice to have. just pointing out the issue is drm
  • rqkaiju2 @ rqkaiju2:
i like physical media because it actually feels like you own it. thats why i plan on burning music to cds
  • cearp @ cearp:
It's nice to not have to have a lot of physical things though, saves space
