Hardware What is LAN?

I am hoping to play a multiplayer game with my brother without the use of internet and I have found that you need LAN to do so but after researching the topic I have found none specific to my issue I was wondering if someone on GBAtemp knew answer thank you

Or, if you're at university or a workplace, the Internet 'belonging' to those places - the current router you're connected to.
