So I just downloaded an iso of super mario sunshine, and I've got a DVD-R here ready to burn, but the extracted iso was in file format ".gcm". I've gotten mixed answers across the net as to what you are supposed to do. Some say just burn it, others say rename is to .iso.

I'm on wii 3.3U using *I THINK* Gamecube backup loader .2 or .3. Not sure.

What they said.

It´s the same thing as an iso, just rename and burn.

I have a viper chip on my game cube, and have burned one or two of these gcm´s after renaming them to iso.

I always assumed it stands for game cube module, but that was just a guess.

That's a lot of wasted space. SMS works on multi and shrunk/multi.

@pepxl - A more accurate analogy would be it's like saying rename a .png into a .jpg and it'll still display fine...and guess what? It will with most graphic viewers.

not really as you cant expect to change a music file to an image file and still by rtenaming and expect it to still open a music file

changing the .gcm to .iso simply by renaming might might work but the header will still be the same .gcm extention within the file itself

so why rename why u can burn it as is

QUOTERight, and good programs liek Irfanview will tell you that you missnamed them

so then it should tell u that the file is misnamed .iso and should be .gcm

Renaming a file can not corrupt it, and assuming you are using a proper player, renaming a song from something like songname.mp3 to songname.png it would still play as an mp3 because it still IS an mp3.

Properly written software works with the content of a file, not it's name.

File names are only for the user to know what the content is, not the machine. If the content of a file was originally mp3 audio, it doesn't matter to a machine if the files name is songname.mp3, songname.png, songname.shit, songname.music, music.songname or anything the user chooses to name the file, but if the user names them with mp3 as the extension, the user will be able to keep track of what is contained in the file.

The case with .gcm is it is an ISO image, but the file has been named .gcm for the user (not the machine) to be able to more easily recognize that the content of the file is Game Cube Media.

(I'm guessing you're some kind of Windows user who thinks there is some correlation between a files name and extension and its content/what it can be used for

Solcott I couldn't have said it better myself...... Unfortunately most media players are unable to find the media without the correct file type in the name. It's simply just lazy programing...... Either way renaming it as an ISO is actually completely safe and for many burners required..... Very few burning tools will burn the file because they use a crappy browser system to find the files that will work in the app. You can name anything whatever and it will likely not load in most windows based apps but changing it back to a file type that is known by the app will correct it. This is not as big an issue on linux based systems. Either way just burn it as is if you can. if the software doesn't recognize the file then just rename it to iso and burn.
