Not taking any modding in account, only official hard- and software for this post:

This is not a fair comparison since the Wii (early, model) is a GameCube. So the Wii has everything the GameCube has and more. The only advantage the good old cube has is Game Boy Player. Of course this isn't a GC game, but access to the libraries of GB, GBC and GBA is pretty awesome.

Both have an installment of Smash Bros and Mario Kart.

Notable on the GC are the Zelda bonus disc with official emulators. Zelda 1, Zelda 2, OoT, OoT Master Quest, Majora's Mask. There is Luigi's Mansion and the usual solid Mario game: Super Mario Sunshine. Metroid Prime 1+2. Didn't play many third-party titles.

The Wii has Super Mario Galaxy 1+2 (better than Sunshine which has no Goombas – this is inexcusable), Wario Land, Metroid Prime Trilogy. That alone is reason enough to have a Wii. Much of the Wii third-party library is useless shovelware – as mentioned above. Many titles make use of forced motion controls or are casual games (Wii Sports) appealing for non-gamers.
    ================

I can't decide. Like both consoles.

Wii had everything, at least the one with built-in gamecube support.
but for wii special games, it wins bij a lot...
    not one single game..
zelda, mario bros, bowling, party, chicken hunt...
I can only think of one great gamecube game: Def Jam Vendetta.
all other games didn't get more than a meh score

The Wii had a fuckton of shovelware, and the vast majority of its would've-been-good games were ruined by the dysfunctional motion-control gimmick; it barely used its Classic Controller. Indeed, the only three actually-playable games were Twilight Princess (allowed you to disable the damn pointer), Super Paper Mario (rarely used the pointer), and Super Smash Bros. Brawl (correctly abandoned the shitty gimmick altogether).

GameCube was far better, even if I never got to play most of its games. The Wind Waker and Pokemon Colosseum and XD: Gale of Darkness; Simpsons Road Rage. I also imagine Pikmin and Pikmin 2 functioned well before they got infected with motionella ("New Play Control" is not "Better Play Control" or "Worthwhile Play Control"), and I've heard SSB Melee was decent.

Wii because it has access to most of the Gamecube's library.

This is a good question. There are a lot of bad Wii games. But there are some good ones, too.

In a lot of instances, Wii games use motion control in a way which makes the game less fun than it would be otherwise. But some games use it well: Grand Slam Tennis, Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz, Mercury Meltdown Revolution, SSX Blur, Skyward Sword.

Some Wii games simply exceed what is available on Gamecube: Xenoblade, Last Story, Tatsunoko versus Capcom, 428 Fuusa Sareta Shibuya De, Muramasa, Rayman Origins, New Super Mario Brothers Wii, Super Mario Galaxy, Densha de Go Shinkansen Ex.

And then the Gamecube has no lightun, but lightgun games work pretty well on the Wii: Sin and Punishment Star Successor, Dead Space Extraction, House of the Dead Overkill, Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles, Resident Evil Darkside Chronicles, Ghost Squad.

Now, if we assume an alternate universe where we can't play Gamecube games on Wii, what would we really miss? A lot of good games had ports, or sequels for the Wii, so you wouldn't miss those that much. But the Wii doesn't have: Crazy Taxi, F-Zero GX, Ikaruga, Skies of Arcadia, Wind Waker, Tony Hawk 3, Metal Gear Solid The Twin Snakes, Phantasy Star Online, Tomb Raider Legend, Timesplitters 2, Viewtiful Joe 1 and 2.

Overall I think the Wii would win out, even without Gamecube compatibility. But I'm glad we can have both on the same system.

I'd agree, however I don't want to judge backwards compatibility because those are 2 different systems

Wii, simply because it's also a Gamecube.

I'd say the Wii has/had better games than NGC. Simply because the way we interact with most of them changed completely the gaming industry. Up to the point that after the WiiMote/Motion Plus was made public and they became a completely new gaming experience, the main competitors tried to get their piece of cake with copycat gaming controls, which to be honest are pure crap. If that's not a prove the Wii was a success, then we can say that M and S, have been improving the whole gaming experience all this years, something that I know for sure its a total fallacy.

Good games are not those that look better (graphically speaking) than others, but those that create a whole new experience for the player, and Wii games achieved exactly that. We can mention some good examples that compared to the same games from other consoles, are considered to be a lot better to play on a Wii: RE 4 and Okami.

We even need not to mention all those first party games that are up to this day considered all time classics for many reasons, and the most important one is their playability and gaming experience.

Wii, in my opinion, had a lot more great games, but the GameCube had fewer totally trash games. It's a balance.

Edit: If I wasn't clear, I voted Wii.

And also because it's a Gamecube on crack with alternative controls. ;)

Backwards compatibility with GC not considered, I'd still say Wii for the built-in internet connection capabilities, virtual console, the Wiimote pointer bring used in games like Metroid Prime 3/Trilogy, bigger games (because bigger DVD), USB ports and SD slot, a standard wireless controller bring used, a system menu with more variety, Photo/Forecast Channel, and more controller options come to mind.
There's also some nostalgic things, like the sound of the system running and reading discs, the blue glow of the disc drive, and the way the Wii looks on its stand.
That's not to say I don't like GameCube, I have a little more nostalgia for many aspects of it, such as the sounds of the system, closing the disc cover, the orange glow of the system and the orange/red Nintendo logo, the way the menu worked, and many of the games.
YouTube videos killed my nostalgia for the GameCube intro

For games though, probably Wii. As I said, virtual console, Mario Kart Wii, Metroid Prime 3/Trilogy, Super Mario Galaxy 1/2, LEGO Star Wars The Complete Saga come to mind.

As much as I adore some of those GameCube games, I grew up with the Wii and have so much love in my heart for its games.
