Ok here's the sitch,

a friend, more of an acquaintance really, knows about my box being modded apparently.
Now, I added him a while ago as a friend on box Live to play some (official) Guitar Hero. Somewhere during that day he had the nerve to send me a message on Live, asking me if I could also mod his box. Implying that mine is modded of course.

Now, I was wondering if anyone knows if your messages get read by anyone at Live or if there are perhaps filters or something. Maybe someone here has ever experienced something similar? I mean, to screw over your friends or whatever, one would imagine this isn't the first case like this in the history of Live. Right?

Modded it about 3 weeks ago with ix 1.6 if it makes any difference.

This started out as a little rant to vent but as I progress writing this I really am curious about any input, past experiences from other people who have been in similar situations or just info and suggestions.

I did notice some changes after that message I got (before I read it). Like, I had to connect twice to Live before it actually connected. And when I went shopping at the marketplace it had a hard time downloading the games' info, getting errors at times as well. Not sure if this has anything to do with it but it was just odd.
The Live maintenance downtime was a couple of days ago, right? So that couldn't be the case... Or have more people in the US had problems connecting to Live?

Anyway, thank you for your input, info, suggestions, experiences etc.

You have nothing to worry about. Modding could mean anything from hacking the firmware to doing a case swap or fan mod. You aint gonna get banned man, stop sweating!!!

True! Hadn't even occurred to me... Yet I can't help but feel they're keeping an eye on me now.

Anyway, thank you for your reply.

I may be paranoid, but he may have set a Microsoft red flag off on you. Kinda like mentioning key phrases when the NSA listens to your phone calls for threats against the president or terrorism.

I Had a friend who also kept bugging me to mod his xbox 360. Its a pain taking the console apart hooking it up, heck I'm still at 1.5.

Make a new account, if he's just a acquaintance and not someone you know personally as a friend avoid him if he becomes persistent. Once you mod his xbox he'll be asking for games and another cookie.

I think your in the safe side. Haven't seen a banned wave in a while, but that's the risk of having a modded xbox 360. As long as your up to date and properly stealth patch your games your in the green zone for the time being.

Aren't there any individual bannings? Or do they all come in big waves?

You're right about the giving them a finger and they'll take a whole hand thing. Not sure if I'll do it.

But the bugging isn't really the problem. It's more the fact that he mentioned "modding" or "hacking" (can't really remember which it was) in the message on Live... It was just one message.

It gives me the odd and creepy feeling that I'm being monitored.

the tone of that sounds like you've been banned before 754boy

as for banning, well Microsoft can be a real bitch about it. I mean i know some ppl that just get banned for no reason at all, but Microsoft tracking the messages, nah i don't think so.

Well, a certain filter wouldn't be such a crazy idea imo. I mean, they can send you a warning when you use too many curse words too often as well. Or so I heard.
So I wouldn't at all be surprised if they had a little filter with those words too...

Or maybe I'm just paranoid. It's probably (hopefully

) the latter.

Wait, so microsoft is legally allowed to view your sent/received messages AND your mic conversations? Even if there are no suspicions involved they are still entitled to view private convos?

That doesn't sound right..

@Jayro, I don't see whats so special about the DS ML, its just a DS lite in a phat shell. At least the phat model had louder speakers, whereas the lite has a much better screen.

@SylverReZ if you could find a v5 DS ML you would have the best of both worlds since the v5 units had the same backlight brightness levels as the DS Lite unlockable with flashme

A woman with no arms and no legs was sitting on a beach. A man comes along and the woman says, "I've never been hugged before." So the man feels bad and hugs her. She says "Well i've also never been kissed before." So he gives her a kiss on the cheek. She says "Well I've also never been fucked before." So the man picks her up, and throws her in the ocean and says "Now you're fucked."

anyways, we need to re-normalize physical media

if i didn't want my games to be permanent, then i'd rent them

Agreed, that why I try to buy all my games on disc, Xbox anyways. Switch games (which I pirate tbh) don't matter much, I stay offline 24/7 anyways.

@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM
  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60

    :rofl2:
  • cearp @ cearp:
still, I agree physical media is nice to have. just pointing out the issue is drm
  • rqkaiju2 @ rqkaiju2:
i like physical media because it actually feels like you own it. thats why i plan on burning music to cds
