lol, I guess books and television qualify for mental health probs too. I was chronically reading comics when I was younger, maybe that is why I have some mental issues. Jokes aside, I believe that mental illness goes quite a bit deeper than just playing video games and being exposed to certain media.

This came from the World Health Organization, so it isn't like FOX made fake news. But yes, it is one-sided, for now.

I'm more than fairly sure, in time, one of the members of this site could write a paper detailing all of the "issues" raised in the W.H.O. and take a good jab at how everything should be and could be defined.

Although, with paid actors (like the kid in the video on MSN), there will always be a "crutch" for these fools to refer to and lean heavily upon. We could also take a stance that the people interviewed, studied, and those who would go on to make the final decision, know little to nothing of the definitions and laws they plan to create....and sadly, eventually do create.

Anything can be labeled a mental illness, the criteria can be anything really. All I envision are a bunch of out of touch old farts who perceive everyone who plays a game is automatically an addict. Granted, I knew someone who played WOW ad infinitum, and had a hard time quitting. Then again, some groups said the same thing about porn, being a major mental health crisis, so anything can be labeled that.

I think we have a shot at defining things in the most accurate way.

This also causes problems in a lot of other fields--I mean, a concerned parent who isn't necessarily informed, might suspect their child has "problems" because they play video games all day, when in reality, the parent might watch just as many soap operas and youtube videos, but the parent will never look at it like that *(hence, the uninformed part--because soap operas and youtube videos take away from...ohh dog video!)

Either way, the effect this can and will have, is going to be a tremendous headache on health providers when parents with too much money, a family doctor, and not enough common sense to know what's right, flood offices and take away time from people with actual mental problems (by not being able to see the right people at the right time).

Becasuse it's easy and it keeps bribes and pay-offs flowing.

I bet you Ninty and Blizzard aren't jumping to give people money to keep research "quiet"

I just think it's a bullshit biased report just because it's an easy target IMO.

I saw this earlier, Kinda stupid, saying that people who are addicted, have a mental illness, When really they just need to shut off the console/computer
That statement is rather ignorant. Someone whom smokes, "just stop smoking". Addicted to porn, "just stop looking at it". Heroin user, "just stop shooting up". A complete bitch, "just keep your mouth shut".

It doesn't work that way. Although some addictions do have a chemical dependency, other addictions are caused by over stimulating the the reward center of the brain to the point that a person has an addiction to the dopamine rush.

So yes, in fact a person can be addicted to video games, memes, or really anything else that brings pleasure. And overuse can cause it to become a mental illness.

I think they just want to make people more aware of video game addict. Video game addict are real mental problem and it can be very unhealthy (China even have send kid to concentration camp to stop them and there many record that people had play game to death) so it about time that they get recognized.

Just like food addict, as long as you aren't over 200lb then it not that unhealthy but if you do then maybe it time to see your doctor.

Anything can be addictive and taken to levels of excess. Parents need to start taking responsibility with their children, Although in this day and age I can understand you don't just want them roaming the streets but at the same time you can't have them sat in front of a tv and games console playing games all day.

I'm addicted to breathing... halp

I have a cure for that, it involves some lead boots and the ocean or swimming pool

Agreed, the same principle applies to people who have depression, anxiety, or other mental illness are told to "just get over it" or "it's only in your head". I absolutely detest those kinds of comments, and comes across as rather ignorant and asinine; as someone with anxiety issues and being with ASD (obviously the really highly functioning side), every time I hear people say that, I want to just tell them to shut the hell up and mind their own business. Addictions, yes, people can't just "turn it off", they require a lot of outside help, and the people are going to have to be willing to change, it can't be forced at all.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

It's not the same as smoking, or a porn addict, or Heroin, Or a "complete Bitch" is it?

Though most might need more help, Shutting it off is a great help.
it might not solve the problem completely(I doubt it will) but it's the first step.

Addictions are addictions, yes, turning it off is a good step, but that's it. Addictions aren't that simple to overcome, either.

You dont get it. Smh.

No lighting up another smoke is a great help. Not opening up a porn website is a great help. Not opening up that bottle of liquor is a great help.

All those statements do not take into account have much addiction grabs ahold of someone and changes the way they think and act. People that are suffering from addiction, those things are far easier said than done.

Oh, and the whole "complete bitch" thing was in reference to my ex because i know she is stalking me on here. But, she truly cant keep her mouth shut or ever stop being a bitch. It is what gives her a rush, pissing off the world and creating drama. Trust me, she has true mental illness issues.

Addictions aren't that simple to overcome, either.

It's okay--some people need to live through stuff before they can understand; it's a critical flaw of being human and our inability to accept abstract ideas without having to experience them.

"The World Health Organization says that compulsively playing video games now qualifies as a new mental health condition."

"compulsively"

"compulsively"

It's pathetic how many people failed to notice this qualifier, or chose to ignore it, when it's the most important part of the sentence.

Does anyone here know what "compulsive" behavior is? It's a symptom of a mental health condition.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compulsive_behavior

Mental health issue. Well defined and documented mental health issue with criteria for diagnosis.

Now read it again:

Compulsively playing video games now qualifies as a new mental health condition.

And let's see some other activities that can become compulsive:

Shopping
Eating
Double checking
Washing
Sex

"OMG THAT MEANS EATING IS A MENTAL ILLNESS LOL" No it doesn't and that joke isn't funny or clever, it just displays ignorance.

Likewise, merely playing games is not a mental problem. Compulsively playing games, like any other compulsive activity, is.

It's fucking sad how many people lack the reading comprehension or intelligence to grasp this.

That's not the problem though, Alot of people do have mental illnesses, and use Games to cope, I for one use games to "cope" so I usually play them often, now saying that's a mental illness in itself, is just stupid.

I don't think you realize(unless you do), The percentage of people who don't play games, are going to see people who play games alot, as mentally ill, Though some are addicted, and probably do need help, I believe that would be a small percentage out of everyone.
I think that if gamers actually wanted to make gamers look good, they wouldn't explode with angry reaction to every little thing; feminists critiquing their games, for example, causes MASSIVE MASSIVE blowback... For what? Because someone had a critique? Honestly, I think that NOBODY is perfect, you and me, everyone else here, EVERYONE could benefit from therapy. I don't give a crap if games are seen as something that can be addicting. Hell, if anything, that would ENTICE people to play; it would romanticize games to kids etc. as something dangerous.

Smells like massive bullshit to me. Could have defined gambling as an issue, but no they waste their time doing this. I never really cared much about WHO, but now I think they suck ass. What about music, movies, tv, any other for of entertainment. People get addicted to those and yet I don't recall any of them having their own mental disorder or any Bullshit like this.
