Do all World Cup events have those stupid horns, or is it just for South Africa? Will they be back in 2012, heralding the end of the world in droning b-flat?

The correct spelling is 'vuvuzela' and those stupid horns are only on this World Cup. There are real people using them, but the 90% of the sound comes from the stadiums' PA. Is a recorded hell.

It's just a South African thing.

The real Vuvuzelas are quite awsome 'cause you can play real songs on it. But these plastic crap thingies are like hell. I must say most of the people in the stadiums stopped and now it isn't that anoying anymore...

I don't watch soccer that much, but that buzzing really annoyed me, and I've noticed that you can kill the sound with an equalizer.

If your TV or sound system has one, I've found that toning down the 1KHz frequency stopped the buzz.

Enjoy, soccer fans!

Various technical measures have been proposed to reduce the impact of the vuvuzela sound on the clarity of commentary audio. The instrument produces notes around the 235Hz (mostly) and 465Hz frequencies and filtering these frequencies out might limit the noise in broadcasts.

...lowering the frequencies 235Hz, 466Hz, 932Hz and 1862Hz.

Band-stop filter at the base frequency and its harmonics. Since vuvuzela are usually 2 feet long, their frequency is usually uniform. Simple filtering can get rid of most of them.

But you know what this means, right? Someone's gonna make a vuvuzela organ. Mark my words.
