After being electrocuted at work, a young Austrian man named Patrick found that he could no longer move one of his hands. He lived with the injury for a few years, but then decided he'd rather amputate the hand and replace it with something bionic - a synthetic hand controlled by nerve signals from his brain. The new hand would move in ways his old one never could, spinning all the way around on his wrist.

Patrick was just the first person to opt for amputation and a synthetic hand, rather than living with a hand that he could no longer use.

Working with Viennese surgeon Oskar Aszmann, Patrick had his hand amputated last year, and now can use his synthetic hand for almost everything he needs - including tying his shoes. Now Patrick's story has inspired another voluntary amputee, a man named Milo who lost the use of his hand in a motorcycle accident. As the BBC reports, Milo is about to go under the knife and receive a hand similar to Patrick's - controlled by signals from his brain, and capable of movement that goes beyond what a human could do.

Unlike other people who have begun to use these brain-controlled prosthetics, Patrick and Milo aren't replacing a lost limb - they are actually removing limbs in favor of bionics. These young men are among the first humans to chose synthetic body parts over their existing biological ones.[/p]

pretty stupid, you can see he doesn't have near the same control he does with his real hand

He had no control in his other hand, and now he at least has some control. It's not stupid, it's a great idea.

Wow... You didn't even read this, did you?

He got in an accident and lost control of hand. Paralysis. He could have either just left himself with a dead arm or go bionic.

actually i did skim the whole thing, i realized that the guy in the video had no control til he got the bionic arm, but i got confused on this part
i thought it meant two different people were replacing their arms for bionics just to do it, since it was successful for the guy that lost control of his arm

Meh. I'll wait a few years for the next models to come out before I get one.

The thing with this case was that the injury did no actual harm to their physical bodies; they could have lived with their paralyzed arms, but that can just be too hard for people. So... they opted for bionics.

    I think it's a great step forward.

I think it pretty cool. Maybe he could get some fake matching skin to cover it up? [IMG]

I assume this is very expensive? In which case only the rich could afford it

Probably for him is free, since they could be doing research in bionic implants with him. But in future, it will be expensive, I guess.

Did you even read the article? The first sentence said he suffered paralysis in the hand after being electrocuted. [IMG]

Improve the flexibility and response time and I'll gladly chop off my own two hands.

Along with making it silent(christ it's loud), adding super-strength,a full chrome metal finish, full artificial sensors for touching stuff and the ability to plunge it in a pool of molten metal and have it come out intact. That'd be great for cleaning.

    here
    This.
But honestly, if I couldn't use an arm, I'd go bionic myself. Fortunately, I have both my arms:D
