If you ignore the setup to run homebrew, then the Vita is better for emulation simply because of the superior screen quality. On 3DS retro games look like washed out, scanline littered shit. Also the Vita is more convenient to hold and the digistick and face buttons are better.

Your opinion sunbeam, not everyone's, and that goes for both the screen and control layout.... (I do agree with you myself on both counts , but can see why many others wouldn't *has both machines running homebrew*)

Is the OP getting mixed up with the Vita and PSP regarding clock speeds? Well anyway, BOTH machines are great in my opinion, and for games up to & including the SNES/Genesis (and most arcade) I'll choose both over my Nvidia Shield (mainly because of the better control layout). Mighty impressed at the N3DS by the way, wasn't expecting it to hold its own so well, and kudos to the homebrew devs! (but yeah... I use the Vita first for the, in my opinion, better screen)

Well it is obvious that the Vita is stronger than an Old 3DS, but what about a New 3DS?
Asking this to see which device I should use for emulation (NOT to start a console war).

Vita:
1. severely underclocked Cortex A9 CPU*
2. Default clock speed: 333mhz. Max clock speed: 444mhz
3. Quad core
4. Higher resolution meaning more pixels the CPU has to process.
*an A9 was designed to be clocked at 2ghz.

New 3DS:
1. ARM11 (not sure if underclocked or not) with ARM9 (only used for DS games?)
2. Default clock speed: 268mhz. Max clock speed: 804 mhz
3. Quad core
4. Lower resolution, less pixels to process.

The Vita specs looks lower, but I heard people saying that clock speed isn't everything. Plus I am not adding in both system's GPU and RAM.
I have still an old PSP lying around (you know you can run PSP stuff on PSV?), and I would prefer that over my N3DS for emulation any time. A bigger, better screen, more homebrew stuff (albeit not more stuff will be coming, at least for PSP anymore) plus more "universal" buttons (basically the same as on a PS2 or above). In fact, the PSP always was a better GBA than the original GBA from Nintendo, and I'm not even the only one saying this :). So, if it is for emulation, get a PSV, although if it was for the consoles own games, I'd recommend the N3DS.

The PSP doesn't even have IPS. And I'm pretty sure if devs can manipulate the framebuffers in the N3DS, they can take advantage of the extra 400 pixels.

Being able to see the scan lines on the screen make it feel more authentic for older games IMO. It's like playing on a CRT. Also, Nintendo's d-pads are just better. Coming from a guy who has a 3DS and a PSP. :)

I'd just play on a PSP or DS if I wanted that, the IPS and higher DPI will ruin the experience.
