I softmodded my Wii years ago and use a 320GB hard drive loaded up with games, with USB Loader GX.

Is there anything to stop me putting the Wii rips onto a large SD and using that instead of a hard drive?

What about Wii mode on a softmodded Wii U? Does that accept large SD cards?

USBLoaderGX is stopping you.
it reads wii games only from USB.

SD for wii games "might" be added in the future. I don't know when.

Not exactly sure about USB Loader GX - the clue's in the program title: it's meant to be for usb...(I could be wrong though - EDIT: Ninja'd by the man himself  )
Wiiflow does the job using an SD no problems.

....but, have to ask 'why' here, have you got a big SD card doing nothing, or are you planning on buying one? For the price of a large sd you could easily buy a much larger portable usb that you can simply hide round the back of your Wii (U), better compatibility (especially with USBLGX), and more space for more games - win win!
