i recently got a psp 1003 (UK model) from a friend who did not need it any more, because i heard it could be modded, i followed the FAQ and was not very comfortable with opening and modifying a battery (that and the fact i am not very accurate with such tiny circuits) so i saw to use the soft-mod method, however it seems that there was only a version for 6.61, is this the recommended version to use? if not, which version should i use?

If you go for the pandora battery method (whether for brick recovery or just modding) the current version doesn't matter, as the whole point of a pandora battery is to boot the console from memory stick instead of internal storage

Yes, you can directly install a permanent 6.61 CFW (ie ME, or the temporary PRO cfw followed by running the included "CIPL flasher") after installing 6.61 OFW on your 1000 series console
