The cIOS 249 (base57) and cIOS (base56) only support port 0 (lower one) to play Wii games. By using the new USB Loader GX version r1280, you can also try to play Wii games from SDCard. GC games can be played from both ports as the loader e.g. nintendont uses IOS 58 with standart USB 2.0 Support.

As the IOS 58 supports both ports, your only change by using a external drive on the backports is using a cIOS 251 or 252 with base 58. Check here for details.

What "popped off" exactly? Are you using a sd to usb adaptor or usb flash drive? As there's nothing to pop off & the port is pretty sturdy (unless the pins are bent inside..etc.)
Btw, you can change the setting in USBLoaderGX (or Wiiflow lite) where the drive is connected (like port 0 or 1). Though you will have issues running Wii games if you change it to port 1.

If you can't use port0, you need to use d2x beta53, which has support for both ports (keep everything else the same, just reinstall 249-251 with same base IOS as before but using beta53)

Not true, IOS58 is for USB 2.0 support natively (which cIOS already support) it has nothing to do with both ports, you need d2x beta53 for that.

Isn't Base 58 Enough?

What is not true? The IOS 58 is the official Nintendo IOS with USB 2.0 support. That supports nativ any USB port on Wii and WiiU. This IOS checks in descending order 3,2,1,0 for a plugged drive. E.g. Nintendont uses only this IOS and every port can be used to play GC games.

Basicly d2x-v10-r52 supports only the one port number 0. And the d2x has a extra modul implemented called "mini ehci" that should give higher transferrates, but is not supported by all drives.

BUT as workaround if you have issues, and you use a cIOS with base 58, you gain higher drive compatibility and both ports are supported. You may try, set loader IOS to 58 (or to cIOS 151(base58)) and the game cIOS to cIOS 151(base58). And plug the drive to port 1.

This way some users including myself using the vWii drive in port 1 and WiiU drive in port 0. Because otherway around you will face drive recognizen issues. Check here or here or here or here.

And i wouldnt recommend beta53 as its to incompatible and facing other issues. So better using the workaround.

Isn't Base 58 Enough?
You may tell us if it works or not without the beta53-alt. By trying using the latest builds of USBLGX (1272, 1272 mod7 or 1280). And setting loader cIOS to 58 or 151(base58) and the global game cIOS to 151(base58).

Every official Nintendo IOS supports both ports (it would be silly to have 2 ports if the console could only use one), this is no different in IOS58, but IOS and cIOS are not the same thing, cIOS use a lot of custom sysmodules and the USB backup loading functionality is very much custom. So it doesn't work the way you think.

That doesnt matter if its a Wii or vWii, technical they are same.

Every official Nintendo IOS supports both ports (it would be silly to have 2 ports if the console could only use one), this is no different in IOS58
IOS are like driver to let the Software communicate with the hardware. Instead of upgrading, Nintendo choosed to put every new IOS in a new slot (Some also updated) for compatibilty reasons.

Nearly every IOS has USB support for all ports for sure. But only USB 1.0 and has compared to USB 2.0 very slow transferspeeds.
While most IOS versions have a USB module, it is limited to USB1, and its I/O throughput make some applications next to unusable when using USB mass storage devices, others have annoyingly long loading times.
Source Wiibrew IOS 58

Transferspeed USB protocols :
  • USB 1.0 (1996): 12 MBit/s* – 1,5 Megabyte/s
  • USB 1.1 (1998): 12 MBit/s – 1,5 Megabyte/s
  • USB 2.0 (2000): 480 MBit/s – 60 Megabyte/s
  • USB 3.0 (2008): 5 GBit/s – 0,625 Gigabyte/s
  • USB 3.1 (2013): 10 GBit/s – 1,25 Gigabyte/s

but IOS and cIOS are not the same thing, cIOS use a lot of custom sysmodules and the USB backup loading functionality is very much custom
The IOS is Nintendos original. By patching these with a d2x patch homebrew capabilitys will be added by implementing different moduls. Including the module "mini ehci" for higher transferspeed, as e.g. IOS 56/57 only support USB 1.0 , with EHCI the USB 2.0 support will be added. But EHCI is a own USB 2.0 standard created by Intel, which requires a licence for using it. While the official USB standard is a result of a consortium of Apple, Microsoft, Intel, Texas instruments, HP and others.

This cIOS (custom IOS) are put into higher slots that Nintendo dont overwrite them and therefore they also have the highest version number.
