Gaming Upgraded to XP

Vista is horrible. Drivers were not a nightmare, but playing games with a wireless card-LAG SPIKE.*KILLED*
Seriously. I had to go buy a 15/18 foot Ethernet(or whatever the name is...) cable just so I could play some freaking games. Then I find out it's HORRIBLE on 1 GB if RAM. I HAD Vista and my brother tells me we won't be able to play ANYTHING with integrated graphics, 1GB of RAM, and Vista Home Premium. So we grab some pirated XP or something and install it. And then I tell him he could install Arch Linux because he loves it so much after XP had been installed for a while and I had loads of stuff on my HD. And when he installed Arch Linux, it went KABOOM and XP was destroyed in the process. He doesn't even know why... Or he doesn't tell me stuff. So now I'm back to freaking Vista because we lost that CD! It's fine because I actually bought a graphics card, 2 GB of ram making it 2.5, and turned off aero effects before playing a game. And then all of a sudden a relative that hates Vista comes over and he pirates XP again and now I got all my stuff on Vista. And basically now I'm stuck with Vista because I don't really want to start over AGAIN.

Anyways, Vista is alright if you have a good computer, no stinky drivers, and a wired connection... And thankfully I have gone past most of that...I even FINALLY found the good updated drivers for my integrated sound. Vista SP1(which I am still wondering if I should install) WILL NOT INSTALL without my freaking sound drivers updated. Stupid Sigmatel/IDT. Overall, I prefer XP, but I still like playing around with Vista.

God, I actually knew the most about DOS back then, and I was still a grade-schooler.

Edit: Actually, I lied. I remember now having to reinstall the entier Windows system (DOS and all) onto that computer though we never did use it in the end. That was fun, had to transfer the floppies between my tower and that one, just to check what .exe I needed to use and everything. Doesn't help we exhausted an entire supply of floppies on our first night running said ancient machine, just backing everything up.

The argument that you have to configure Vista to the way you like so it must work right is fail!!! You have to do the same thing to XP especially if you want to improve overall gaming performance. You would have to disable Security Center for XP as well since that includes the same thing as Vista. Disabling UAC is one additional thing that's basically an on/off switch.

Blaming the lack of drivers for Vista on Vista is ridiculous, too. You could just blame the company that supposed to support the hardware. I could also argue about the lack of support for wireless adapters for XP or how XP mysteriously decides when and where the adapter will work. Having to install additional manufacturer software so the product will work only to have to go back to Windows Wireless Zero Configuration to get it running properly. Even with XP, I still have to use retarded third party drivers to actually get stable connections. ATI's abysmal support for their TV tuners using filters that ends up locking out every other filter on the computer and having to search the ends of the internet to get tools that unwrap those filters and uninstall them.

Linux and OSX are also pretty ugly in terms of support. UGH!!!

Vista sucks in the way that you have to disable many "features" just to make turning on the computer not a chore which makes you want to kill yourself. You're not supposed to customize something to make it bearable, you customize it to make it more comfortable. If the main program is just so annoying to use without modification, they need to rethink some things. I shouldn't HAVE to bother with these things. By that definition, MirandaIM sucks because you have to customize it to get it the way you want. Urza would be proud.

You can use Miranda IM at default. Just ask Scubers.
Any further modification is because I want it to look better, not because I find default unbearable.

There's also many annoying little things like if you move or copy a file to a folder, the folder will be brought to the front. No matter what you do. The new folder structure is a pain to navigate and extremely inefficient. There's lots of folders which I should be able to enter yet for some reason I can't. The TEMP folder was set to read-only ffs. I had to manually change the location of the TEMP folder windows was using to one I created just so I could install stuff. Err... what? What folders cant you get to?

Local Settings, which is important because without access to that folder, any installer which puts any files there won't work.

My faulty graphics drivers weren't the only reason I got rid of vista. It was merely the straw which broke the camels back. Both the ATI and Nvidia drivers downloaded from the website work fine.

Both me and tomqman couldn't get the drivers to work with Vista and we have the same graphics card.

I've been using Vista x64 for over a year now to make full use of my 4 gigs of ram. The OS is pretty stable, drivers have now matured for it and I can play virtually all my games on it, even older ones.

I've disabled aero and the sidebar, as I just don't like them. I also don't like the fact that Vista takes up so much room on your disk, when you compare it to older operating systems.
That been said, one feature I do like is the way Vista will use your free ram to cache data and release the ram when another app needs it, making it faster to access it. XP on the other hand would just leave your ram free, making it a bit of a waste.

Personally I never really liked XP, Vista isn't much better on that scale, though I use it to make use of newer hardware, directx10, access more ram, more optimized for dual/multi core cpus, etc... Ideally I'd still love to stick with windows 2000, unfortunately not everything works with it now, so that isn't possible.

As for the comments about windows 7, it's being built upon the Vista kernel.

I run XP but prefer Vista.. only reason using XP is because my PC specs are rather shite...

Turn off the gay settings you don't need in Vista then customise it to how you want it and voila!!!!

Funnily enough Vista isn't as unstable as everyone says... it's just a gimmick saying because people don't like change... to me XP is blocky and very outdated... ok fair enough everything works on XP but near enough everything you need on Vista works anyway.. I'll grit my teeth through this one because this arguement has been repeated thousands of times across forums all over the web..

I suppose the whole "Vista uses more RAM than XP!" thing could be what gets me. I mean...what do you generally do when something starts to get full? Get something else to store it. So when most people see that their computer is using most of their RAM, they go out and get more RAM only to find that WTF it's still doing it?!

I didn't know about the caching -> release thing Vista had, but unfortunately I haven't encountered Vista on a computer with more than a half-gig of RAM so...

I suppose that when I finally rebuild my tower, I'll look at stuffing Vista on there in some way and see how it goes.

My mate at school often gets BSODs on Vista, on a laptop.
also I've seen the file explorer crash countless times while randomly browsing folders.
Vista's unstability is a reality... it's not because you have a stable version that everyone does.
Other way around works too, but that doesn't remove the fact that it's unstable for a lot of people.

I hate my Vista, and I can't figure out how to dualboot XP onto my second 8gig harddrive that came on the computer.

And Costello is right, my explorer.exe crashes at least 30 times a day.

I disabled Aero, I run on the Windows Classic theme.
I turned off transparency.
I changed how windows minimize
Basically, all the stupid graphic shit that makes retards get hardons for vista.

Windows key+pause/break or right click on My Computer and select properties. Advanced system settings, performance settings, adjust for best performance, apply. See if explorer crashes now.
