After more than a year, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has gotten a fresh update with a focus on the Switch 2, and it's surprisingly meaty. For those Switch 2 players, they'll be looking at higher resolution output on both the TV and Switch 2 display, shorter loading times, support for up to eight players in local multiplayer, and even support for USB cameras when playing online. It's worth noting that camera support is limited to GameChat though.

On top of this, all owners of the game can also enjoy a small tweak to the speed increase you get for collecting a coin, a tweak to Boo that will remove slow-downs while active, and most notably, a full 96 race VS Mode, allowing for a functional All Cup Tour for those who own the DLC.

Changes List said:

Support for the Nintendo Switch 2 system

  • Added support for the Nintendo Switch 2 display and high-resolution TVs, allowing for clearer visuals.
  • Shortened the loading time before races and battles begin.
  • Added support for 5–8 players in Multiplayer.
    • You can connect up to seven Nintendo Switch controllers (Joy-Con or Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers) to the Nintendo Switch 2 system. In order to play with eight people, you need at least one Joy-Con 2 controller or a Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller.
  • Added CameraPlay support.
    • A USB camera (sold separately) is required to use CameraPlay.
    • Players can turn camera ON or OFF in Multiplayer (2-4 players) and Online Play modes.
    • In order to use a camera on the internet, players must participate in a GameChat session. The camera footage and microphone audio will be sent only to GameChat members.
    • When the camera is ON, the player’s face is displayed during the race.

General

  • Increased player speed during races by the equivalent of one coin.
  • Players will not slow down while using Boo to become invisible, even when entering an offroad area.
  • Players with access to the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – Booster Course Pass will have “96 Races” added to the “VS Race” rule settings.

The update is live now for both the Switch 1 and Switch 2.

Who wants MK World when you can keep playing 8 Deluxe.

For me, they're two different games. Mario Kart World has new gameplay, so it can coexist with 8DX. In fact, I think they could continue releasing retro tracks for 8DX and turn it into the definitive classic Mario Kart, but with a more conservative approach.

For example, Wario Stadium from the N64 appears in World, but it's quite changed. A more traditional version could be available in 8DX.

I do agree with this. It very much feels like Monster Hunter World vs Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate. Gen U was the best send-off the old world could've gotten before they switched things up a touch. When you have a game as big as 8 Deluxe and Gen U you do need that kind of game to follow it up.

I'll be interested to see how they handle Smash with it being in a similar boat.

Turn MK8D into a live service game? Hell no. Nintendo already released plenty of DLC and there are physical cartridges with all of it, no need to milk it to death and potentially ruin MK8D by doing that.

Nintendo could instead tweak MKW and release new content for it as it doesn't feel much fun, at least for me.
