Gaming Upgraded to XP

I hate my Vista, and I can't figure out how to dualboot XP onto my second 8gig harddrive that came on the computer.

And Costello is right, my explorer.exe crashes at least 30 times a day.
No exaggeration.

I dunno what all the features everybody says to disable.
I disabled Aero, I run on the Windows Classic theme.
I turned off transparency.
I changed how windows minimize
Basically, all the stupid graphic shit that makes retards get hardons for vista.

My brother used my laptop a month or two ago. I expected him to say like "wtf is this vista shit", but he was like "OMG THEY UPDATED SOLITAIRE FAPFAPFAP"

Most of my friend like Vista because it looks pretty. When I tell them you can make XP look the same with themes they are like "BUT VISTA'S FASTER" And I'm like, no, you just bought a new computer.

God, I actually knew the most about DOS back then, and I was still a grade-schooler.

Edit: Actually, I lied. I remember now having to reinstall the entier Windows system (DOS and all) onto that computer though we never did use it in the end. That was fun, had to transfer the floppies between my tower and that one, just to check what .exe I needed to use and everything. Doesn't help we exhausted an entire supply of floppies on our first night running said ancient machine, just backing everything up.

Hard drive space? 256MB. XD

MsDOS 7.0 was 14 floppies! My dad still had his original set up to a year ago. AOL proggies, Zork, BBSes, porn and Dirty joke databases, good times.

Let's see, I've ran Vista on and off on some hardware since release. Since then, I have encountered some disturbing issues. And not the usually windows drops, oh no. New fun ones! Before you suggest anything, I did not do any major changes or toy with things I did not understand. I left the OS alone to do it's thing.

The laptop: Many networking functions would take 6+ minutes to load after login. Any attempt to access the piece of shit Network and Sharing Center (save yourself the trouble and make a shortcut right to Network Connections, google for it) would result in explorer hanging or crashing. Some applications would not perform any network related functions until this period of time passed. Thankfully web browsers would work. This prompted me to remove it and go to running debian on the laptop all the time (have since moved to Ubuntu 8.04 dual booting with XP, put in a larger hard drive

).

The desktop machine: I'll start with Microsoft related problems as there were a couple others that is not Microsoft's fault. Start up times became inconsistently awful AFTER installing service pack 1. I don't mean my start up time began taking 4 minutes each time. I mean it could be 1 minute to be in, at the desktop and loaded, and find myself waiting up to 10 minutes if I did nothing and restarted at that moment. To be fair, I will say that I did not try to fix this problem because I was done with Vista at this point anyways. Probably because explorer was crashing multiple times a day, usually when copying files to and from removable devices. The machine (which I am currently using) is now running Windows XP SP3 and Mac OSX. The latter will not be existing long though. OSX runs perfectly well and even pretty fast too but there's just no big appeal for me to run it when I can just run debian or ubuntu instead.

Other reasons I left vista that are not related to Microsoft: Creative's abysmal Vista drivers. A $100 sound card with features that constantly were experiencing technical issues in many games (and down right crashing the computer on more than one occasion). That lovely Works With Windows Vista sticker on the box should include the word "Barely" at the beginning. ATi drivers were awful at the time I ran it on my laptop. I especially liked the version that locked my resolution to 1024x768. That was a fun one!

Now a little end point. My issues are not 100% signs that Vista is terrible. They are personal experiences and nothing more. For instance, I bought a laptop for my sister 6 months ago. It has Vista and it seems to be holding up fairly well still. Which amazes me as numerous times in the past I've had to fix up XP on prior machines because of her.

Now onto some hope. I am not shunned off from Windows 7 and here's to hoping for some radical changes. If only to make things interesting.

Vista still has issues, but almost all have a hotfix of some sort, sometimes you have to search for it. Daniel_K's drivers for Creative cards in Vista are much better than the official ones.

I remember looking into that actually. I have an X-fi xtremegamer card. Don't look too far into that of course, I could get it at cost which really made it about $60-70 for me so it seemed like a fair choice. I don't think he had anything for that card but then again, I did check a few months ago so memory may be hazy there. Again, that's not a vista fault. Problem lies in Creative's court.

I had no problems switching from 95 to 98. I had no problems switching from 98 to 2000. I had no problems switching from 2000 to XP. I've had a fuckton of problems in switching from XP to Vista. At one point I managed to have it installed for a week but thats as far as it goes. I'll probably just skip it all together and wait for Windows 7. I wouldn't mind staying on XP even when Windows 7 comes out though, but maybe eventually DX exclusives will force me to switch (actually goes for Vista as well).

I think the newest drivers have danielk's work around implemented. At least that's what I'm seeing on my Audigy 2 and that card is older than yours. Also, the stupid ALChemy program is now free, so you can enable EAX in games and what not.

Just got the wireless driver which obviously works, off to get the rest.

Vista sucks in the way that you have to disable many "features" just to make turning on the computer not a chore which makes you want to kill yourself. You're not supposed to customize something to make it bearable, you customize it to make it more comfortable. If the main program is just so annoying to use without modification, they need to rethink some things. I shouldn't HAVE to bother with these things. By that definition, MirandaIM sucks because you have to customize it to get it the way you want. Urza would be proud.

There's also many annoying little things like if you move or copy a file to a folder, the folder will be brought to the front. No matter what you do. The new folder structure is a pain to navigate and extremely inefficient. There's lots of folders which I should be able to enter yet for some reason I can't. The TEMP folder was set to read-only ffs. I had to manually change the location of the TEMP folder windows was using to one I created just so I could install stuff. Err... what? What folders cant you get to?

All my programs weren't working correctly under Vista and I had to reinstall most of them only to find they still wouldn't work the way I wanted to. A lot more random problems like MPC not having sound yet VLC did etc etc. UAC bitching at me pissed me off (You need to ask me to change the FONT SIZE?) and after I disabled it, Security center took over. Security center? whuzzat? And my MPC, VLC, WMP, etc work fine
The network was a bitch too configure correctly and I was stuck for 3 hours before I could go online. For me it was a matter of clicking on the network center and selecting "New connection"The "Network and Sharing center" is just way too confusing. Also, everything was too hard to get to. Your LAN connections In XP it were just 2 clicks away yet with Vista you have to go through a menu. In Vista, it's two clicks away too. My faulty graphics drivers weren't the only reason I got rid of vista. It was merely the straw which broke the camels back. Both the ATI and Nvidia drivers downloaded from the website work fine.

summary: you're too used to XP. So, waiting for windows 7 isn't going to solve anything.

I have vista... and about the taking 3 hours to get online...? I didn't even do anything at all. I plugged in the Ethernet cord and I was online o.o;
