Hacking Upgrade worth it?

I'm a very indecisive person =) I have a pink DS, the old one. Its cute and everything. But working in a game store I see the NDS lite all the time. I wasn't really interested in the DS lite until I had to keep using the model at work to delete nintendogs saves from pre-owned copies (annoying little kids

).

Now Ive worked out that I might be able to get a DS lite for very cheap. I can get staff discount from the NDSlite so that'd be £90. The trade in for MK and nintendogs are £20 each, so thats £40 in total. I also have polarium but thats probably not worth a lot! And then theres the DS itself... I can't remember the trade in value for that. Does anyone know the GAME trade in value for a DS??? I think its around £40ish, so I could get a DS lite for £10 maybe :-o

Now, it seems worth it for £10... but as a Supercard user I'm not sure. The supercard would stick out the bottom! And that would draw even more attention to the fact its not a genuine GBA cart thats in there. And it wouldnt fit into my lovely NDS airform case any more :-o but i could get one of the Lisa Simpson sets that are so cute and with a charger thing as well!

Of course, there are the Slot one devices now, but they are so many its so confusing! And since they are so new, are they even worth getting at the moment? Micro-SD memory has always seemed like the most expensive type, and most useless! I mean my miniSD from the supercard can fit into my phone and camera if necessary. And are there just going to be new and better slot one devices in the future?

Is the upgrade worth having considering i'd probably need to/want to update my supercard to something else too? Is there honestly much difference in the NDS lite's playing.

it's very worth it the lite's battery works quite a bit longer and it's an easier fit in anywhere you might need to stick it
asfor your backup problem i'm going to have to reccommend the R4

Yes. Do it. You aren't buying a purse you are buying a game player and the DS Lite has a much clearer brighter screen and a longer lasting battery which gives a better gaming experience. You won't regret it. You can work out the other things over time or use the other DS.

I'd normally say there's no point swapping a DS for a Lite due to the cost, but if you don't mind selling those games and it's only £10 then why not?

If you can, nab a unit at work and test out playing on a lite with a standard sized GBA cart in. It's really not as much of a pain-in-the-ass as you'd think. I've just gotten used to taking the cart out* to put the DS in a case. My cart (EZFA) is quite a loose fit in the lite though, so I'm hoping I don't make the cart worse by removing it all the time.

[Edit] Thinking about it a DSL with the Supercard in it will probably fit into your old Airform case without needing to take the cart out...

*(the fact that I don't mind storing my cart elsewhere has nothing to do with the Hello Kitty tin I modified into a gamecard holder. Honest!)

BTW, on topic, Phat > Lite switch was well worth it for me. I went from a Red Phat which I loved oh so much to getting a black lite. It does show more finger prints, but its so compact, better battery handling, easier to hold for me anyways... And it looks sleeker.

Uh, GAME are selling brand new DS lite for £99.99... i got to £50 taking into account staff discount (£10 off) and trade-ins.


Cheers for the advice everyone =) I think I will most definitely go with the upgrade but will see what I think of the DS lite with a GBA cart in it! just need to get the box's for the games sent over from my parents! =D

The DS Lite looks much better, has better screens, and is overall more "cool" than the Phat. But it has squishy keys and D-pad, and is smaller. After playing some Mariokart on a DSLite after getting used to my fatty version, my hands were cramping in places I didn't know had any muscles that could cramp. I suggest you try it out for a few hours (minutes at a time) at your workplace, and see what the Lite feels like. If you're comfortable with it (or think you could get used to it), I say the upgrade to a Lite is well worth £10.

If you have the normal Supercard SD or Supercard CF card your going to find they stick out wayyyyy too much on the ds lite.

I really like the Lite's squishy D-pad. It's a dream to use compared to the one on my GBA (which is much harder, thumb-pain inducing and not diagonal-friendly at all). I'll admit I haven't clocked in enough time of a phat to compare it to that though. I agree with the hand-cramping point, the Lite's not very hand or wrist friendly when being held at weird angles (I take it as a sign that I've probably been playing too much

yep, once youve tried the lite, the DSphat feels like a monster and the screens just seem pathetic after getting a lite

as for cramps, Ive never got any and Ive got a wide range of games with the different control styles, brainage, metroid hunters, mario kart etc, and all my buttons feel and work fine

I' on the other hand, prefer the GBA (and DSPhat) keys. I prefer clicky buttons. Better feedback.

It's all a matter of taste. This shows the importance of trying it out yourself

I find both the fat and the lite to be uncomfortable to control - especially when using the stylus (there is just nowhere to rest your hand).

I'm actually in the same boat right now. I'm questioning whether I should sell my original phat silver DS. To get a DS lite. I figure I could sell it with a few games on ebay and possibly net 120$CAD with out DS lite's being 150$CAD. I currently have a Passcard 3 and M3 Slim SD. I'm also questioning if I should get a new passcard and M3 lite so nothing sticks out the bottom. (My friend has a supercard lite and the supercard passcard [not sure of it's name] and I noticed that their passcard doesn't have any splash screen which is much better than the passcard 3's.) Is the M3 lite similar if not identical to the M3 Slim. Other than the lite uses the microSD?

As for slot 1 devices. I like the GBA functinality. I use it less than the DS playback but I still use it none the less same with NES emulator.

Hey! I just thought I'd give an update and thank everyone for their input =)
I've just been to the shop, traded in my old DS, Mario Kart, Nintendogs and Polarium (got £4 for it!) which I got a total of £87 for (possibly could have got a little more on ebay but its not worth the hassle of waiting for the auction, posting, paypal and then fees etc). Anyway, with staff discount I paid a total price off... wait for it... £2.99 =) I was well impressed hehe. I like the feel off it, tis very nice. The stylus feels better. My super card does stick out... but its not really noticeable =) Though having just seen topics for really cheap micro-SD cards (which i original thought was an expensive type of memory), I will look into getting a slot 1 solution at some point in the future! The lite fits into my old case quite nice (it was always a big case!).

When I traded in my DS i sneakily kept the wrist strap because Im sure I saw a post saying the DS lite doesnt come with a wrist stap ! Hehe. Proper happy, definitely worth it for £2.99

i was in the very same situation. i had a ds phat and well i never cared about the ds lite. but finnally i decided to sell my ds phat and get a lite ds.

it's ace u WONT regret buying a ds lite

believe me. screens etc everything's better.
