I'm thinking about upgrading from my old Xperia S. I'm trying to find one that's not too pricey but won't be mostly obsolete in the next year. I've heard good things about the Xperia Z series but the pay-as-you-go models are a bit expensive.

Perhaps I might suggest a Zenfone 5. There's also a Zenfone 4 and a Zenfone 6 but the Zenfone 5 is the medium sized one, the one that I have. The 8GB Variant of the Zenfone 5 costs £149.99 while the 16GB Variant costs £179.99. The Zenfone 4 is £99.99 while the Zenfone 6 costs £249.99. All of them have five different colors except for the Zenfone 5 which I believe has about 6 colors. All of them are bound to receive a Lollipop update sometime this April.

eBay is full of them and as long as they don't have Computrace enabled (computer tracking stuff)
    they are great

The ones that are parts and/or not working are from what I can see.

companies use them for three years or so
before they are dumped on the market

nah you can find lots of working ones if you look carefully
