Dropping a syscheck report on ModMii is the easiest way for IOSes. It will make a download list of what it knows is out of date.
Homebrew apps you'll either just have to look to see if there are updated versions or they have an internal update feature.
The Homebrew Channel will update itself if the Wii's internet connection is configured. The latest version is 1.1.2 and it's years old.
