today, I decided to update several apps on my 3ds. I do have several questions though.

1. with retroarch, do I need to install each core separately or can I just install the base app? are all cores in the base app? this goes for the Vita too.

2. about rtc - is that what godmode uses to determine the time? I was thinking about changing it and having the rtc time in sync with the actual time on the system. if I mess with either, will it affect the other (i.e. making it impossible to have both in sync)? also, I read that changing the rtc value can cause some games not to boot - is this true? if I reflash a NAND image, will the rtc be affected at all? are there any real benefits to doing this?

3. can rosalina install cia files? if so, can I just dump fbi? and, is tiksweep the best way to remove unused tickets?

4. with the gm9megascript, do I really need any other scripts? can it backup and restore sysNAND?

5. do I need to restore download play after installing the hb launcher or is download play the best way to get into the homebrew launcher, so I should just leave it?

with retroarch, do I need to install each core separately or can I just install the base app?
It's recommended that you don't use Retroarch, the 3DS port is unmaintained, unsupported, and very unstable. Use New Super Ultimate Injector or Bubble2k16's emulators instead.
this goes for the Vita too.
Just the base app, you need to put all the core files in the right place though
about rtc - is that what godmode uses to determine the time?
Think of the RTC as the "real clock", with the time the 3DS tells you being the "fake clock". The real clock is never changed by anything other than removing your battery, the fake clock is just a number that tells the console how different it is from the real clock.
f I mess with either, will it affect the other (i.e. making it impossible to have both in sync)?
It will change the other, but if you set the RTC to be correct and then run ctr-no-time-offset.3dsx they will be 100% in sync because the fake clock's offset number will be 0.
I read that changing the rtc value can cause some games not to boot - is this true?
Nope. Changing the real clock with either system settings or the no time offset 3dsx will cause games to not allow you to do time/date based stuff for 2 days iirc, but changing the RTC never does something like that (handy for things like keeping Animal Crossing turnips through a daylight savings switch)
if I reflash a NAND image, will the rtc be affected at all?
I don't think it is.
are there any real benefits to doing this?
Timestamps in GodMode9 will be 100% accurate and you'll be able to adjust the time/date without games knowing (as long as you change it in GM9 and not system settings)
can rosalina install cia files?
Nope.
is tiksweep the best way to remove unused tickets?
Absolutely not, it sometimes deletes even used tickets. There's no reason to delete unused tickets anyways.
with the gm9megascript, do I really need any other scripts?
I don't think you do, although in rare instances you might want to.
can it backup and restore sysNAND?
Yep.
do I need to restore download play after installing the hb launcher or is download play the best way to get into the homebrew launcher, so I should just leave it?
You should, as restoring Download Play will allow the Homebrew Launcher icon on your home menu to function properly.
