OP
I have a CFW PS3 and I want to update my games as they normally would automatically if you played while the PS3 is online. I don't want to connect my PS3 to the internet because I'm worried I might get banned from the PSN or I'll receive an angry email from Sony. What are my options for updating games offline and is it worth the effort?

You can use PS3 Game Updates from aldostools to DL the Updates you need then transfer it to your PS3
http://aldostools.org/ps3tools.html Bottom of the page has the download link.
DL it on the PC. Transfer the PKG you downloaded on your external USB and install it using Install Package Files.

Another option is to Update using MultiMan by pressing Triangle when hovering over your Game and selecting Update. This option just looks for compatible Game updates and won't update your PS3's firmware. Although this takes longer, you don't have to transfer stuff.

Both options require internet on your PC or PS3. No PSN required.
