About a year ago I purchased "Homebrewinstaller" - I know, my first mistake - which instructed me to downgrade my Wii to version 3.2 to play backed up games. I now have New Super Mario telling me to update. Will this update brick my Wii if I do it safely with complete softmod guide? It had me use cIOS Downgrader for that process and I am concerned that the new IOS's will cause a problem.

I know I can use Starfall, but I would like the upgraded functionality. I am also looking to just switch over to a USB loader anyway.

Thanks for your help,
-Nick

well it dependes what your talking about? is that " the pay for it" version of homebrew?
homebrew is free.. an the way you have it set up know.. not sure what damge it would do if you tryed to fix it.. could brick.. but if you are on 3.2 still.. then start from scratch.. reformat the wii.. an start over.. on this sight is a tool called modmii. it will help you big time.. (mad props to who posted it).. it will install all you need.. (i.e. priiloader, homebrew. the whole works).. make sure you pick up dop-mii. this will install or delet iso's.. an download safely.. all the new updates.. happy gaming..

Shortz, what I paid for were the instructions, all the programs were free and this place provided direct links and good step by step instructions. And then I found CompleteSoftmodGuide and realized I could've had instructions for free. The HBC included is the same we all know and love. +1 for Modmii, I've already looked into it and will more than likely use it.

Lacius, I've seen that guide and it looks helpful. My only concern is that all the guides say "don't downgrade, you don't have to anymore", but I already did, before you didn't have to downgrade. My concern is that when I upgrade, will whatever cIOS downgrader did cause a brickable situation.

Below I pasted the instructions for what it had me change, anything look out of sorts?

"G - Downgrading To Version 3.2
For Homebrew to work correctly when playing backup or downloaded games, you will have to downgrade to version 3.2. If you only want to play Hombrew games and
applications, then you won`t have to downgrade, and can skip this step. To check your system version, go into your Wii`s menu, and then: wii settings/console settings/ update console. You will see the version displayed in the upper-right hand side. You must have the Homebrew Channel installed before you proceed.

Step 1 - Once the Homebrew Channel is installed, fully format your SD card using the official SD card formatter at: http://www.sdcard.org/consumers/formatter

Extract the "Wii Fix Tools Full" folder that you downloaded from our Resources page Final Step, and drag the "apps" and "wad" folders onto the root of your SD card.

Step 2 - Place the SD card into your Wii. Open up the Homebrew Channel, open "WAD Manager 1.3"

Step 3 - Press "A" on the Wii Mote once. The Wii should detect a SD Card. Press "A" again to see a list of WADs on the SD Card. Use your D-Pad to select "IOS16-64-v257-prod.wad". Press "+" to install the WAD. Once the WAD has been installed, press the "Home" button to restart you Wii.

Step 4 - Using the "Homebrew Channel", open "Custom WM". Now, using the same method as in Step 4, install the "cios_fix.wad". Once the the WAD has been installed, press the "Home" button to restart you Wii. Note: If that fails to install, just use "Wad Manager 1.3"

Step 5 - Using the Homebrew Channel, open "IOS Downgrader". Just follow the instructions and just wait
until it finishes installing the necessary IOS`s. NOTE: You're Wii will require a connection to the Internet otherwise this process won't work. Same for the next step. If you do have a Internet connection and you get errors while it's installing the IOS`s, just restart the Wii and try again.

Step 6 - Using the "Homebrew Channel", open "Install Shop IOS51". Say "Yes" to installing the "IOS51" and "Yes" to patching a fix but "No" to the "Wii Shop Channel" (it shouldn’t matter if you install this but it won’t make any difference). If it doesn't work the first time (116 error), keep trying. It may take a couple of tries as this is a fickle process!

Step 7 - Using the Homebrew Channel, open "WAD Manager 3".

Step 8 - Now you should be able to install WADs. Try installing the "WAD MANAGER V3.wad"

Step 9 - Take the file called "cIOS-Downgrader_v1.2" that you downloaded from our Resources page Final Step, and extract it. Then transfer it into the "apps folder on your memory card.

Step 10 - Run the Homebrew Channel and select the "Cios Downgrader" option."

All else fails can I just create a NAND backup with Bootmii and restore with that if there is an issue?

Thanks guys for your help.

if you want to update your wii w/o requiring certain disc i would only update to 4.0 or 4.1 and use bannerbomb if you update past these system menu you will have to aquire one of 4 games to softmod your wii where as bannerbomb can be done by dragging files to and from your sd card alot easier. But yes ModMii is the best way to go about soft modding your wii :) not sure if you can use bannerbomb on your 3.2 wii but not needed if you have the hbc anyways. Updating your system menu by either Wad or Safe Installer will not erase your softmod.

You should also note forwarder channels cannot be deleted by system menu updates (offical) from what i've read and there by you may want to install a forwarder channel for one of you wad manager (MMM is a good choice or YAWM). While your at it grab IOS236 installer app and install that so just in case something goes wrong you still have access to wad manager :) and IOS236 will have all permissions needed to install anything.

ModMii --> http://tiny.cc/ModMii
MMM --> http://tiny.cc/MultiModManager
IOS236 installer --> http://tiny.cc/cios236

Basically what you probably did was patch IOS36 to get homebrew working since you did it so long ago and what IOS236 is just a patched IOS36 installed into another slot like 236. So a freak official update by a family member wont render you helpless so you can reinstall everything back to normal.

Take the advice given above and rehack your wii however i wouldn't say formatte your wii either just reinstall everything. Also now im thinking of it if your on that low of a system menu you have to have bootmii? full brick protection so if you do mess anything up as long as you have nand backup of your console your good :)

if your simply just wanting to not be bothered with updates install Priiloader --> http://tiny.cc/Prii6f and get the hash file here --> http://tiny.cc/PriiHashHacks and disable disc updates and your super mario bro's will not bother asking you :)

So in the end you do not need to redo your soft mod unless you would like to. I would just to know i have the latest but it's your choice :) Remeber Priiloader and Bootmii go together like Butter Toast mmmm ;-p
