yeah so at point 8, its
backup nand
turn off, backup everything from the SD (especially the nand.bin file)
go back to the GW menu again and choose "format emunand"
turn off again and copy everything you backed up onto the SD again (this is an optional step, if you don't have any games installed or saves, you can just skip it)

now to help make sure you update emunand and not sysnand, format sysnand in the system settings, then choose a different theme i.e red for sysnand and blue for emunand, at this point enter gateway mode twice just to familiarize yourself with the red for sysnand and blue for emunand once you are certain you have done all those steps correctly you want to run sysupdater in emunand mode NOT sysnand mode

Also the 3DS doesnt read exfat SDcards as you said in #1 the SD in the 3DS has to be fat32, the SD in the gateway card can be exfat if you want though....also there are no cia files bigger than 4GB (unless someone has made a hefty game mod/hack that i have missed that exceeds the 4GB size)

Too kind. In a few hours I'll call my friend and help him install everything correctly this time. About the NVRAM option, do I skip it? Thank you to everybody.

well you can install NVRAM via the blueard after you have installed the bluecardfix to sysnand and downgraded sysnand MSET, also look for the thread about getting the 3DS profile exploit to "stick".....basically you just install the profile exploit, then change your NDS profile name, then change it back, and that will make the DS profile exploit "stick" semi permanently....there are some things that will cause it to wipe, NDS games with online features iirc if you try to access them, and booting NDS mode while holding select (to start a NDS game in small screen) will also cause it to be wiped iirc

Thank you for the suggestions everybody, but out of desperation he bought, again, another New3DS 9.0. This time I'd like to follow him step by step to be sure he doesn't fuck up again, so if some of you could be so kind to take the time and review the steps I am going to make him do, it would be incredibly appreciated. I really don't want to take any chances with him.

1) Format his 16GB Nintendo SD card to exFAT so he can place his cia's bigger than 4GB

2) Format his 8GB Gateway SD card to FAT32

3) In the root of his Nintendo 16GB SD he'll place:
• LAUNCHER.dat (3.4.1, he doesn't care about the cheats of 3.5)
• the standard 3DS folders
• "updates" folder containing 9.5.0-23E cia files to update emuNAND (european console)
• ntr.bin
• "cia" folder containing bluecardfix.cia, mset_eur.cia, sysUpdater.cia and BootNTR.cia

4) In the root of his Gateway 8GB SD he'll place:
• devmenu.3ds

5) Boot CN and do the QR Code to boot GW menu

6) NVRAM Install immediately (this is where he fucked up last time, missing it)

7) Backup system NAND, turn off and put it somewhere safe, then delete it from his SD

8) Boot CN, boot GW menu, insert red card and boot emuNAND

9) Open devmenu.3ds and install sysUpdater.cia

10) Open sysUpdater and install 9.5 updates (now that he has NVRAM installed they shouldn't update his sysNAND, right?), reboot the console, CN, QRCode, and go to GW menu

11) In GW menu, insert red card, move cursor to Boot Gateway Mode, hold B and press A, then X to boot in sysNAND GW mode

12) In sysNAND GW mode, open devmenu.3ds

13) Install mset_eur.cia and bluecardfix.cia (does the order matter?) then reboot the console

14) Remove SD and Gateway card, and format the console in sysNAND, then proceed with the language, region, 3D settings etc.

15) Start GW menu from DS Profile and boot emuNAND

16) In emuNAND, open devmenu.3ds and install BootNTR.cia and his .cia game

17) Play the goddamn backup

Is everything going to work fine if I make him take these steps? Am I missing something? Thank you for everybody who will take the time. Also, does there need to be a specific devmenu to install the mset, or is any devmenu/bigbluemenu fine?
if everyone kept records like this then troubleshouting would be a breeze

He doesn't care about the blue card or playing NDS games, I remember the DS Profile exploit removed itself when I played NDS games, but as you said NVRAM from blue card and it came back. All he wants is to play his cia games on emuNAND, so skip NVRAM? 100% sure?

Sorry if I'm harrassing some of you, but now that I've stepped in to help I really don't want to owe him 190€. I'd really owe you all a beer :P

One thing you may want to change:

If you format SysNAND after downgrading mset, you won't be able to re-link any existing NNID to SysNAND without updating mset again. This may not be an issue for you, but you should format SysNAND BEFORE downgrading mset to unlink your NANDs.

I don't know why I'm going apeshit for this console, I've ""hacked"" three 3DS' this year with my own hands for GW+CN and everything always went smooth. It seems explaining it to someone via text messaging is harder, either that or I've gone full retard in these last months.

The official GW manual says to do NVRAM Install (I really hate this thing by now) in the steps for the mset DS Profile exploit. Should I do as it says?

Only do it if your friend wants to boot Gateway using MSET. What's the most important is that you create Emunand and make sure you run and install sysupdater in Emunand.

Instead of explaining by text message, tell your friend to read the Gateway guide themselves and then ask if they are not sure about something. Then you have a good reference point for what part of the process they're up to. And if you don't k ow you can ask us and then we'll have a reference point too.

As others have said, the NVRAM install is just to allow you to use the DS profile exploit (means they won't have to carry Cubic Ninja around). If your friend has no interest in that then it's not important.

This is a lot of work to update emunand. Just use a 9.4 game and update to 9.4.

Functionally there is ZERO difference between 9.4 and 9.5.

Yes, he would prefer to load emuNAND with DS Profile as it is more handy.
Unfortunately he understands less than me about this stuff, and his english isn't very good. I'll do things slowly and try to get everything right. If his 3DS explodes I'll report here.

That wasn't the problem, the problem was that he didn't format emuNAND when setting everything up, so he updated sysNAND. On top of that, if it weren't for you guys I would've made him do the same mistake twice because I have the memory of a penguin.
