The main thing the new update brings is compatibility with newer games that require at least this version, such as potentially Smash Bros. I'd rather update while I can. I can't possibly imagine that any potential future kernel exploit would require 5.1.2 or below.

There's a high probable chance that there'll be a new firmware update when Super Smash Bros. comes out because it's going to be used with the GameCube adapter (optionally to use but it'll still be an update required for all to stay online).

Unless I find people to play locally, many of us waiting may be SOL should the game require 5.2.0, and it will....what should we do about this firmware update?

Why not just stay on current firmware until smash wii u comes out, then if no progress has been made, update? It's not like PS3 just yet; you're not "locked out" once you update yet, and it'll be a while before anything happens, so why not just sit tight until smash?

I don't know, I'm just the on-the-fence kind of guy, you know?

One thing's for sure Smash Bros. for Wii U is definitely coming this Winter 2014 because Nintendo said so on their digital newsletter. November or December, come fastah!

That's what people are saying.

Actually my VWii starts up and then shuts down the console immediately. It normally shows the Warning Screen then it just powers down. Kinda PO'd. -_-

EDIT: FALSE ALARM. IT SUDDENLY DECIDED TO START WORKING AGAIN. DISREGARD THIS POST. SORRY FOR ANY CONFUSION.

Hi,

Can anyone please confirm if you have successfully updated to the latest v5.2.0 having ios80 patched? (http://gbatemp.net/threads/patched-ios80-installer-for-vwii-allows-sd-menu-custom-channels.344882/)
I am not really sure it has anything to do with it. Actually, I'm skeptical about it! So far, for the last 10 months or so that I had my ios80 patched, I've been able to update successfully to every single update including v5.1.2 without any issues but now I'm getting a 162-3006 error when trying to install this v5.2.0 update. Everything works fine but I can't use the eshop channel etc.

I've read elsewhere that this error could be related to internet issues, connections, ISP cache etc. but since this update does affect vWii perhaps having the ios80 patched could be the culprit. On the other hand if it actually were the culprit, would it be safe to install an unpatched ios80 etc?

Warm regards

Pepois

The next winter is technically winter 2015 and winter 2014 is already long gone and done. Yes, there's one ~1 week of winter at the end of the year, but ~3 months of winter (aka almost all of it) at the beginning of the year. </pedantic nitpicker>

Back more on topic, I know it's been said if you're on 5.something, there's no additional harm to be done going to 5.2, but if I'm still on 4.something is that still something worth staying on to wait for homebrew, etc.? I'm not 100% what I'm on (I really should look), but I know it's before they added the quickstart or whatever to the gamepad.

This isn't necessarily correct.

There's no reason to not update to 5.1.0-5.1.2 except for the fact that you just can't any more.

So....in other words, those who are on 5.1.2 can't update to 5.2.0 safely then...? Esp those waiting for an exploit? I still am on the fence.

Soo... Any reason not to update? My Wii U downloaded it on the sly and is constantly nagging me to install. :/
