Just in case, I might as well add/emphasize: Make absolutely sure that you are using pasta/minipasta when trying to update, or you will likely brick!

Also, if your 3ds gives you a black screen after updating, try taking the sd-card out of your 3ds

Actually, yes! RxTools eventually replaced Dev Mode with Pasta CFW, which is also its own standalone CFW. Either will work, just as long as you're using RxTools Pasta (Aka dev mode) or MiniPasta.
