I am trying to choose the allocation unit size when formatting a 1gb usb thumb drive, however the only available option is 'Default allocation size' and I was wondering why that is

That aside, it may be that the flash drive doesn't support other cluster sizes, or that there's something weird about the drivers. Try updating your motherboard chipset drivers.
