So a while back, I jailbroke my iPhone, but lately I haven't been using the jailbreak features.

I was wondering how to go about un-jailbreaking, and what could happen.

I see people saying 'Restore in DFU mode', but my last backup is quite old. Will I lose anything such as text messages by restoring to this backup?

Any advice?

You'll have to restore to your last backup BEFORE the Jailbreak if you want the jailbreak completely removed. Some Cydia apps like putting things into settings and iTunes backs them up. Handy for upgrading, not so much for unjailbreaking.

What if I uninstall all packages? Could that help? :/

EDIT: If I delete all Cydia packages I've installed, backup on iTunes, restore the new backup, upgrade, could that undo my jailbreak without losing anything?

Okay, so I just removed all cydia packages I've installed myself.

I have a feeling this probably wasn't the best idea, but I do want to un-jailbreak.

(Note, only my stuff, like osu or notification centre mods, nothing cydia behind the scenes stuff.)

EDIT, Off topic: Wow. 3000.

Okay, I just finished un-jailbreaking. I think. Everything seems unjailbroken, and working fine.

All I did was backup (jailbroken), go to update, my phone went into restore mode, eventually I got it to restore off the backup I made, let it sync for an hour or so, then checked and everything seemed fine.

Sorry, but when you said you restored off the backup you made, are you referring to the jailbroken backup?

Cause it seems kind of odd, restoring a backup made from a jailbroken device

I think he means he restored his phone and then restored the settings and data. As in, right clicking the device and restoring the backup that way.

Yeah. It ran me through the initial setup again (Use location services, wireless internet point, restore)

That works as a full 'unjailbreak', right?

It should be...

Out of curiosity, why did you want to unjailbreak your device in the first place? I was thinking of jailbreaking mine but I was hesitant
Ah! I wasn't really using the features, and after my device had crashed a few times and was lagging, I decided to un-jailbreak.
Mind you, I was just using Notification Center mods and osu!. It all depends what you want out of it.

Well the only reason why I want to jailbreak is for SBSettings and emulators, but it sounds like it's not really worth the effort if my device is going to be crashing and lagging

Thanks for the tip mate

My device doesn't lag but based on my experience (iPhone 4)

It crashes occasionally.

Safari suddenly closes for no reason occasionally

I dunno why there was once I jb-ed and I couldn't fully install ANY cydia stuff.

I tried to restore to iOS 5.0.1 when I wanted to sell my iPhone off but ended up restoring to iOS 5.1 because of the 3194 issue and nothing can be done. Tried everything on the web :(

Oh, and the emulators suck. You should get gameboid instead if you have an android.

Now with iPhone 4S iOS 5.1.1. I never want to jailbreak again. I'm fine behind bars.

You could have ripped your APTicket from your iPhone 4 with iFaith, then restored to 5.0.1 using the saved APTicket. You'd have had to done this before you installed the 5.1 firmware, though.

As for everyone else talking about jailbreaks being buggy, I've never had any problems other than one minor issue with icons occasionally (maybe one icon every week or so) appearing white, which can be fixed by a reboot or respring. If you guys have been having problems, I can almost guarantee you it's because you installed a faulty tweak or something went abnormally wrong during the jailbreaking process. And even if you install a bad tweak (which I did a couple days ago), as long as you have Mobile Substrate, you'll be able to remove it without much difficulty. It's also worth noting that when bugs are found in the jailbreak, they are very quickly fixed through Cydia updates.

And on the topic of un-jailbreaking, I don't believe that Cydia does this, but some jailbreak apps save settings that iTunes will back-up and restore, though the settings won't affect your iDevice in any way if the jailbreak app is not re-installed (other than eating up a few kilobytes because data takes up space).

[My apologies for necro-bumping this thread, but there's information that hadn't been brought up]
