Seems like this would be much safer/easier just using a new SD card, formatting the emunand and the going from step 3 onward.

What happens if you go through this process on a system which has never had FS installed? Is there a risk or bricking or will there just be an error saying the title isn't owned or something else?

you are asking what happens if you install a game/app you do not have permission to play/that is not signed correctly for your system?
what happens when you try to load a 'pirated' eshop game in classic mode? nothing, it just doesn't load, you get an error.
unless you do weird things, you are not going to brick your 3ds.

Shame, I mean they were giving it away for free last year so i thought it might not have usual drm. Guess I'll have to keep using my GBA cart on my old dslite :(

Okay, I've tried this method in 3 different ways: using a FunkyCIA-generated CIA of a game I owned, using a FunkyCIA-generated CIA of a game I didn't own and also using a game I bought via the eShop. In all these ways, I get an error in transferring the game back to the sysNAND on my 4.5 3DS.
Where am I going wrong.

Delete this thread please. Its useless. Rename it to "recovering lost DSiWare" or something.

not just dsiware, this will work for anything, gba games, 3ds games... etc etc :) (but yes i agree it should be renamed)

most probably because the ticket does not exist in your sysnand... right?

If you make a linked emunand out of system nand, update it, buy a game from eshop and dump it without fake signing and install it on system nand doesn't it install the ticket?
