It looks stunning, no doubt about it and after the excellence of Persona 4 Golden I was itching for another Atlus release but this game really seems to be the definition of all sizzle, no steak. It all feels so by the numbers and repetitious with very little substance underlying it and thats with 10 hours into the title as I was waiting for it to "git gud".

    Does it?

I found it to have none of the charm or depth that P4G had at all in any respect from the bland characters, samey dungeons and super basic puzzles/fetch quests. The story is interesting and kept me going but it really does seem that the main thing people like this for is the shiny battle graphics as the combat system itself is very simplistic.

As I said I'm huge fan of Atlus/JRPGs in general but I also have really high standards and only play whats worth playing instead of the "that'll do" approach just to fill in spare time and this title seems to be like when they released True Crime Streets Of LA on the Gamecube and everyone raved about how amazing it was. Yeah sure, it was amazing on the GC because GTA wasn't on it!

Seems to be the same deal here as the Wii U isn't exactly overflowing with JRPGs so people act a bit more generous with what little they get but when contrasted to other titles on other platforms it feels like a very weak release.

Did anyone feel the same or did you enjoy the title? If so, why?

How far into the game are you? I was hooked after the second dungeon.

Your enjoyment of the game probably depends on how much you understand the idol business in Japan, how much of an Otaku you are and how much you enjoy glamorous take on a corrupt/dark/dirty RL Japanese scene/business.(Yakuza also comes to mind on how glamorous sugar coated the business is).

The inclusion of Fire Emblem lore is minimal actually and it is based on older games,

The mechanics/engine of the game is essentially Persona 4.5, and to its merit I really enjoyed the battle system, it feels really awesome when you start to manage to make flashy 19 session combos.

I'll have to check as I haven't played it for a while, hence the thread. I think I was past the 2nd dungeon though. It just felt like such a step back from P4G in every respect though and whilst I'm no weeb I do understand the otaku aspects but still it was the actual game that felt very meh.

Its like you said about the flashy battles, thats all its really got and after a few its very "been there done that" as the combat system itself isn't that good and the world itself is also very samey. Just not enough of distinction in it for me as I'm a AAA or nothing kind of guy and had some expectations for this one but think P5 would be a better game to play.

To me the battle felt like a Persona title for sure, what I meant when talking about the session combo, is that the battle mechanics become more complex later on, do you enjoy the sessions combo mechanics? If you do not then ditch the game because the battle system is all about you choosing your skills wisely and training your team to sync properly in battle, the goal is that in each turn, you manage to make ALL of the game characters attack on the same turn, even the ones not in your party.

Also if you're not playing with the restoration patch, you should.
