Well, I'm going to look for that second wiiu this weekend. I did find my old ps3 that was banned. :P. I really don't have the energy to keep trying different things. I'm pretty sure it's developed heating issues based on tactile sensation.

alright, I checked out the price of a new fan, an official one, and it's only $8, so I'm going to replace the fan instead. I really don't want to migrate everything over to a new system. that would be a major headache.

I'll test it more thoroughly tomorrow, too tired tonight. Not sure why they sent me two fans, but I used the one comparable in size to the old one. The old one was dusty as hell.
Maybe a little Cleaning / Maintenance (A drop of machine oil often works Wonders with old Fan´s) and you can still use your origianl Fan.😉👌

I tried the new fan with about 4 stages in dkc returns. It was running about the same speed as the old fan, so I could only hear the fan when it was quiet. No overheating. The real test is a wii u game, where it was overheating originally. It would take about a few hours.

I played for at least 10 hours yesterday (got to the last world in dkc returns and the last stage in tropical freeze). no shut offs. one thing I noticed is that the fan is louder with the vwii, so it may be like the ps3 where there's no dynamic fan control while in vwii mode. that seems to be the case anyway. it was pretty quiet while playing tropical freeze, but I could hear the fan when I got close to the system. I also periodically touched the system to see if it was hot like that one time when the fan seemed to have shut off. it was not. it was only marginally warm or it felt normal, and it stayed that way throughout the gameplay. I'll continue to test it as I got another wii u in the mail on the same day I got the fan and triwing screwdriver. it's still sitting downstairs, kinda stinks too. lol I plan to return it as I got one with 30 day returns, even if replacing the fan doesn't work (mostly due to the fan, and it's pretty scratched up too). :P

Either your fan was weak or damaged. While wii u's barely get warm when it is working properly, they will get extremely hot and shut down quite fast if that fan fails.
When i was dumping the nand of one years ago i noticed how the heatsink got extremely hot to touch in a matter of seconds without a fan. The best test you can do now is play something like BoTW in a somewhat hot day, forget the thermal pads, they are likely fine as even the dreamcast/GC/PS2 ones are still fine to this day.

I take that back about the dynamic fan control. it only seemed to be louder with a vc inject, but using the vwii itself, it was very quiet just like with the wii u side. it only gets a little warm, and I can feel the fan's air when I place my hand at the back of the system. one thing I wasn't sure of is where that mesh piece goes, since it fell out when I opened the top of the system. it's the piece that goes before or in front of, depending on how you look at it, the fan itself. there's two slits on the top cover that it slides into, so that took me a bit as there's no mention of the piece in any tutorial. anyway, my vinyl strip arrived today, but I'm still testing the system. it's working fine from what I can tell, so I've initiated a return on the other wii u I bought. it was less than $8 to ship it back. I only bought that to get around having to reflow or reball the system, which doesn't seem to be the problem here. it would only overheat after like 10 hours of consecutive gameplay. I'm pretty sure it's fixed.

does anyone know how long the wiiu can run without a fan? I'm a bit paranoid about the fan even running, yet I can feel air coming out the back. it's just I can't physically see the fan running based on where it's located in my entertainment center. it's run as long as 10 hours straight without a problem.

That tiny fan moves very little air. If it is running for hours straight it should be fine.
Checked mine:
Air in: 21c
Air out on menu: 39c
Air out with BoTW: 38c
Top case: 29c
If you can barely feel the heat then it's normal.

Do you have a picture?

Thanks. What's odd is the fan is audible several feet away when using a wii vc inject, but it's quiet with the normal vwii and wiiu.
It only gets mildly warm after about 6 hours. The mesh piece is the grill that goes behind the fan instead of having the fan exposed. There's a slit on the top piece where it goes before you put the top back on.

btw, the seller I bought the fan from--actually sent me two. one was fat, which I used; another thin. I don't know why he sent me two fans. I mean who is going to use the thin one? lol

That is very weird, i can hear mine but it isn't much loud, it makes less noise than the drive spining a disc. Also i have never noticed any noise change, not sure if the fan is even capable of changing speeds. Do you have a link to the ad or a pic of the other fan?

Re: dynamic fan control, as far as I'm aware the options are "off", "on" and "really on". Haven't found the code that picks between them, though, possibly something in the hacked cafe2wii is messing with it /shrug
Quark! Very interesting, does that means there might be a temp sensor on the apu?
