So, I'm on the verge of finally buying a Nintendo Switch.
One thing I'm sure I'd like to do with it is to mod it, given that I'm lucky enough to get an unpatched one.
Now my question is: I intend to buy some software from the eShop, does it require to update the console as well like it was on the 3DS when trying to access the shop with an outdated firmware? If it matters, the game I'd like to download is Cuphead.

Also, are there any things to know that precludes modding my console out of the box, besides checking the serial and updates? Kind regards.

If it's not patched, you can update and download the game (of course if you haven't run CFW before). After you ran CFW once, you should never go online with it. Only way is to revert back to the clean NAND backup which you should create before you ran any CFW. Keep in mind that updating to 8.0.1 now will burn your fuses and you won't be able to downgrade your switch without the need of using a custom payload every time you boot.
