Hardware The right modchip

S'happenin?

I live in the UK and intend to get a modchip for my wii for xmas, however I do not have a soldering iron and have never done this type or thing before.

I guess I could get my old electrician teacher to do it for me maybe but if that cant happen then I just want an unsoldered mod.

What is the best chip for me?

Both soldered and unsoldered.

Ah, I thought maybe there were boot discs or clip ons.

Wiikey is the most widely available modchip, but it requires you to keep it up-to-date in firmware to play games with tougher copy protection.

D2CKey (or whatever it's called) may be a better choice though, what with the D2C chipsets being the ones you currently get off the store shelves (I think).

Burn the update.iso
Boot
Hit upgrade

You download an image file containing the firmware,
burn it to a DVD,
then put it in your Wii,
start it as a GC game,
and then follow the on screen instructions.
A Homer voice at the end confirms the install went fine.
Starting the update using GCOS isn't necessary and might actually not work, so if you can, try and start the update disc directly.

You'll have to use the D2CKey if buying a new Wii as most if not all new Wii systems are D2C. That's a hell of a soldering job!
