If that's true, then the series has officially lost the plot and died a miserable death.
There's nothing memorable about BotW or TotK, not when there's hundreds of other similarly-bland open-world games - and dozens that do it immeasurably better than BotW or TotK ever could.

...Exploration is wrong.
Link should be frustrated with the lack of dev-placed map markers, and thus lack of direction, from beginning to end - as it is, "exploration" is just stumbling around lost, not knowing where the goddamn content is, wasting so much limited time. How's that fun, or "awesome", I ask you?

Sure, kids might have a bunch of free time, but as an adult with a job and increasing responsibilities...I'd rather MAKE PROGRESS in my games than waste it being lost and frustrated. Bloody hell, Nintendo.
