R4 official firmware updates died in 2008, not 2007.

Acknowledged, and thanks for the fix.

New update: cleanup, added spoiler tags, and inputted more suggestions.

I guess Nintendo know exactly what to look for now, eh?

I still occasionally use the terms flashcart and flashcard interchangeably. Considering that DS games are on cards rather than cartridges it's still valid.

Thanks Ryukouki,

Excellent intro.... From a formating point, you may want move the description for the table headers from the SuperCard series information to an expandable DIV of their own just below or above the comparison table.

I don't actually own a DS and am a complete newbie but have been asked to mod and subsequently, regularly update 5 dsi's for my nephews and nieces. Their ages range from 6 to 13 and will want something fairly easy to use. Ideally I'd go for the Supercard DSTWO but chances are I'm gonna have to foot the bill for all 5 cards plus 8Gb MicroSD cards

I'm looking at getting the AceKard 2i and want to know if it can support playback of .avi video files and if so how easy would it be to set up? or would I be better off trying to get my brother and sister to pay for them and go for the DSTWO?

Also, any suggestions on which retailer to go for. I need them delivered to the UK within 10 days?

Finally will the AceKard 2i support all classes of MicroSD card (2,4 and 6) and any preferences on brand (Kingston, Dane-elec, Sandisk, Toshiba or Duracell);

Thanks in advance!

Sadly, the Acekard 2i does not support .avi files.
You could always convert those .avi files into a .dpg file and run them on the homebrew application, Moonshell.

0shippingzone is a good retailer.

Yes, it supports all classes of MicroSD cards. I suggest you get a microSD with a high read speed.
I prefer Kingston microSD cards. They are quite reliable.

sorry buddy, but the acekard can only play dpg
the acekard is just a basic flash cart, it doesn't do anything special, but it does have great rom compatibility

Thanks for the prompt reply guys.

I did look at 0shippingzone.com but as with most of the other suggested retailers, they're based in China or Hong Kong where I believe there is a public holiday for a week and I need the cards by the 12th Feb, hence I need another retailer that can offer similar prices.

Thanks for the heads up about not supporting avi files. Reading through the AceKard thread I was under the impression it would support avi's via the Moonshell homebrew.

So, if not the 2i, then which card would you folks recommend that supports avi's, Hidh capacity SD cards, is cheap and has the breadth of support the AceKard?

Cheers.

Well...unfortunately, there is no other flashcarts that support unconverted .avi files except for the iPlayer, DSTWO, and iSMM...all of which are around $30...so if you are planning to buy something cheap...you are going to have to drop your hopes of unconverted avi support...for the most part, the AK2 is pretty much the cheapest with amazing support...though people could argue for the R4iGold etc...it's safer choosing something with less clones anyways.

Sorry RoMee my bag, forgot to set my country flag to United Kingdom.

Also, 0shippingzone.com has been added to FireFox's block list as an attack site!

OK, before I make my final decision I'd like some feedback from owners of DSTWO cards.

I've looked into the .dpg format and tried converting some avi's into dpg then playing them back on my PC using dpgshow.exe

I realise the DSi is for playing games and not watching movies but is another way of keeping the kids quiet.
Is the playback of native higher res avi files any better than that of coverted dpg files which I'm assuming are 256x192 at max?

I've had a quick scan through the supercard forum but can't find anything on how the DSTWO supports avi's, does it convert them on the fly, have built-in decoders, emulation etc. Does it over heat when playing movies? My apologies if this has already been discussed before, in which case a pointer would be great.

Thanks again.

Hi Rydian, this is Ryukouki. As I am out abroad, I kinda have no access to my accounts since I had them suspended per my request to focus on my studies. If ANY mod is gonna pass by here, please change the title. You have my express permission. I will not return until February 28th, so I'll see you then!

EDIT: rest assured when I return I will do my best to quickly update the material here, to what newcomers need. or, this topic can be removed because apparently I didn't do a good job with it.

This team (M3) is slowly dying, they have not updated in a while. Although they have a nice interface with Sakura, its features pale in comparison to other teams. I would pick a different team

I'm kinda curious what this is based on. Surely they aren't the fastest but some others are also slow. Plus they're working on 3DS compatibility and stuff. Or did I miss some news about the M3 team?

OK so I'm planning on ordering a supercard dstwo tonight and I was wondering what size microsd card I should get. Is 2GB too small? Also what emulators will I be able to run on it?

2GB would be limiting, as many DS games are around 64MB average, and can go up to 256 or even 512MB each.

As for emulators...
http://gbatemp.net/t255764-list-of-all-emulators-for-ds

In addition to those, the Supercard DSTWO has it's own GBA and SNES emulators (though they run slightly slow).

This guide is fantastic! I certainly needed it when I was looking into buying a DSTWO. I think one major improvement to it could be..... to add available GBATemp Magazine Review hyperlinks to each cart, if it's available. Some people may need to read on with a bit more to get convinced.

ACEDIT: Also, a mention to ShopTemp for more available shops is probably a good idea
