ROM Hack Question Texture mods

So what’s the most recent news on using texture mods on games and playing them online?

So in other words if I add some texture mods to SwSh(because lets be honest, the graphics are not the best) and play against players online, will I be susceptible to a ban?

P.S I haven’t bought a switch yet, I was holding out until I know I can upgrade the textures safely!

You might be lucky but there is a good chance you will be flagged for a ban. Any sort of modified data is easily detectable.

Is online really that valuable a feature?

Paying for it and then only being left with Nintendo's awful servers and games to play on them...

It’s the only way to have replay-ability in games like SwSh and Mario Kart imo

Mario Kart had a pretty sweet local play mode, even on the Switch version. Online just being sterile.

As for pokemon online then that always seems a boredom fest a few weeks in -- all just people with max level, max stats things and thus pretty random or "oh no I made a mistake" and the core loop is nothing special either.

Not to mention aren't there third party offerings these days?

While not quite as nice as the stuff we saw for the Wii and DS, or indeed even the original xbox, there were some people doing stuff with putting local options over VPNs and whatever else.

I have not kept on top of it all though but hopefully https://gbatemp.net/threads/official-switch-lan-play.520912/ will be a start.
