) think that the present can do most work for us that, meaning, no one gives a damn to do hard way anymore.

Well why would people even try to work hard, when there's an easier way. Although, if suddenly all of the easier ways to do things vanished, people would adapt to it, as Dave already stated.

Yep, exactly that. If the choice between starving and eating was a little bit of hard work only the truly lazy would starve. We'd also all learn to become gardeners/hunters again so we could grow vegetables and eat. That kind of thing. You'd also see a huge shift in the job market. Jobs that pay a fortune now would of course be worthless. People who have kept old traditions alive, like gardening, hunting, classic forestry and that kind of thing would be the ones with the skills everyone wanted to take advantage of. For proof that man can survive pretty well without technology just look at the average Amish community. It's probably who we'd all turn to for advice if technology was suddenly made defunct.

No, I'm not saying that. I'm saying that workplaces in America are quite far from each other (are they?).

We used to get to work by horse, carriages, and of course the greatest human feature, our legs. We have done it up until the 20th century when we started making all this technology. We all love it, but it is nothing more than a luxury.
It takes work and energy if it's from a distance, it's hard but not impossible. Animals are form of transporatation

Can we live without modern technology?

Yo. We're talking about living/life WITHOUT technology. Not thinking that we can't live without it because we wouldn't be able to debate right now.

If we didn't have modern technology, the cities would not be exactly what they are. Of course they would still be large, did you see NYC before a car was made, there were horses, carriages, bicycles, etc all in the streets. We survived, didn't we?

Also, if the technology we had today did not exist, humans would adapt to the situation and actually pull there weight, like our grand parents and great grandparents did in the past. This technology is an excuse to make us lazy. I am a prime example of this, sitting hear typing on my laptop shows it. But if it never was around, we could and would survive.

The computer isn't the whole entertainment. My granparents, and my father just listened to old radios just for them to have a pastime.

You also have to remember that its the USE of technology that consider you as being lazy or resourceful. When I had to go through 2-3 weeks of no internet, I admit I wanted to kill myself. All I ever did was watch pointless youtube videos, play countless hours on MMORPG, blogging about stuff like this one, finding the newest rom to download and pirate. When I start to realize I needed to go outside and have 'fun'; it challenge me to cope with the streets of modern day youth & multi-cultural lifestyles.

Even though I did have TV, a DS, and computer; the internet was my only place of solitude and comfort. When it was taken away from me, a darkside of bitterness and hatred begins to envelope me like a deep guilttrip. My family members didn't realize my addiction to the internet has comsumed me so much that it basically was a challenge for me to go to bootcamp without it! After awhile, its that pyscological mindset we create to fill the void inside our lives.

If we live without MODERN technology, we will be repeating past mistakes because of the lack of security (Police Cars, Surviellance Cameras, Home Alarms) communication (Cellphones, txting, E-mails, INTERNET) food storage (Refridgator, Freezers) the list goes on. We might be able to correct those, in the end we will be having more problems instead of more solutions.

A point that I am surprised no one has touched on is medicine. Due to breakthroughs in medical technology within the last century people are living decades longer than any other time in history. Without modern technology we would lose billions of people from a lack of medical care alone.

This isn't a very good debate...everyone agrees that we can, except for newcomers who have no arguments with which to back their 'no' up.

Actually (I don't remember where I read this, so it could be false), we're not actually living longer, the life expectancy (average) goes up because were saving newborns more efficiently.

In most western countries the majority of people are in fact living longer and these countries are experiencing an aging population. Birth rates are down as most families tend to have just 1 or maybe 2 kids (USA is an exception when it comes to family size).
Many western countries are thinking about increasing the age of retirement, simply because an aging population is putting more pressure on finances due to pensions etc.

I think we can physically live, yes, but our current way of life would be wrenched apart. I believe that a lot of people would die once the technology was removed. Without fast communication, many people will won't get to the hospital, and essentials like food supply chains will break down.

There's nothing stopping us re-building them, but many people would die in the interim period.

You also have to remember how many people rely on technology and don't know any different. Sure, everybody knows that food comes from farms, but that doesn't mean that they actually know how to plant, maintain and harvest enough crops to feed their family. The people who do know how will be limited in the number of people they can help because modern farming relies so much on modern technology.

I'm sorry to say this, JetKun, but I fail to see why you made a 'debate' topic, whilst you aren't much of a debater yourself. All points you bring up are, in fact, bollocks (unless you brought them up to get the debate going, but as that isn't really necessary I assumed you thought of it this way).

We can definitely live without modern technology, as many others (in/and the past) have stated already. The real question is: would life be easier (again)? That's something that is impossible to know. Of course, there wouldn't be any hassle with computer problems and such anymore, but it would be much more of a hassle again to move from one country to another (pirate ship instead of cruise ship, horses instead of cars, dragons instead of planes, general stuff, y'know).
