https://nintendoeverything.com/nint...revision-with-replaceable-battery-for-europe/

on feb 18 2027 the european law will force all electronic devices sold there to have a user-accessible battery. I'm really excited to see what's to come with these new editions and electronics in general. Back to the good times.
It's really good for both the controllers and the console itself. I wonder if they'll use the same battery setup as the switch 1 pro controller for the new pro controller

Never buy things day one, folks :D

This is great news. But I have the sinking feeling that ninty might increase the price for such a model for in Europe as well as limiting warranty to local buyers (ie only able to claim warranty within europe to deter exports).

While this is targeted at the European market, similar policies could take place in Japan and the United States “if consumer awareness of the right to repair increases,” Nikkei says.

It takes far more than that. I'm sure that there is already plenty of awareness and grousing about it outside of the EU. But as it stands, the legislators in such countries simply don't have the interest or will to put it into law like the EU. Except maybe Australia.

All electronic devices? Game controllers? Maybe 8bitdo will update their Pro 3 controller with a built in battery pack to have swappable packs? Or go back to being able to use normal batteries like the Pro 2? Let's see.

only available in the EU, not the rest of the world.
I'm european, and as much as I'd like this to affect other countries, it affects me so I'm happy.

This will affect many other electronics worldwide though, like phones.

If the new model isn't OLED don't even bother. Just Nintendo milking the same cow dry.

Due to eyesight issues, I actually prefer IPS over oled because of the white pixels blurring on the black so I'm fine with this.

What on Earth are you talking about??? They are REQUIRED BY EU LAW to make this model in order to continue selling the Switch 2 in Europe!

The constant and incessant whining about Nintendo and their alleged motives is really disturbing.

I have somewhat mixed feelings about this.

On one side, it's great that we're finally getting right-to-repair laws. While I don't own Apple devices, from what I heard they always deliberately made stuff that wasn't user-serviceable, and just about any attempt to repair iPhones yourself was met with intentionally disabled features or even a brick.

Even the Steam Deck, which was touted as an user-serviceable device with most parts readily available, had the battery straight up glued to the casing, making it extremely hard to replace.

On the other side, companies will have to do a lot of R&D to figure out how to comply with the law and make the batteries more accessible. And that's not to even mention water-proofing. And there's no way in which the companies will just suck up the price of the R&D, they're 100% going to jack up the prices on their devices to compensate for it.

Yep, even back in 2007 you would never find something harder to open and repair. Now apple even bothers with putting a chip in the battery connector to detect if it's legit. And i think now they're forcing components to be locked to their device or origin/icloud to stop them from being used elsewhere. Such anti repair BS.

I don't think it will be that hard... Having a back plate with a few screws to access the battery should be enough.
On switch 2 at least the battery is just under a metal plate the moment you open the system, so that seems easy to re-arrange. I've seen custom batteries literally cutting that metal plate to fit a larger size. So there is space.

And water proofing is possible even with removable back covers. Look back at some android phones, I think some S series samsung. Even then I don't care about water proofing myself, it has been used as an excuse to seal phones even further making repairs harder (and to remove the headphone jacks...)

This will surely limit some phones though, like all those weird foldable phones that have like a battery sealed behind every portion of the phone.

Starts in the EU, but will surely be spread across all markets.

Yes, everything with a battery.
„From February 18, 2027, all portable batteries in consumer products must be readily removable and replaceable by the end-user.“
So new Samsung and Pixel phones will come with a replaceable battery? Awesome, but too bad Google is about to f*ck up Android. 😑

I'm european
There are Europeans living in other continents too, though they usually just use the term "White" instead.

Under the EU, any legal citizen is legally "European" so there's that too. It's like a gaijin, say a European living in Japan can apply for Japanese citizenship and be "Japanese."

As long as one isn't bothering anyone and is a law abiding citizen that's all that should matter.

Then stop using the Internet. Theres no law to forbid criticizing their business choices, which is why EU is enforcing them to begin with.... Think about it, we need laws to aid ownership of our devices now. A damn good reason to whine about I'd say. If your switch 2 battery fails for whatever reason you a (US consumer) are not allowed to modify the console under their terms:rolleyes: This law enforcement needs to be a global practice.

Yes! EU finally doing something to address the lack of repairability of these devices.

The thing i hate the most on my Switch OLED is the fact i have to disassemble the device in order to change the battery.
And that its glued down. When I upgraded to the Switch 2, I pretty much had to change the battery in it as it was becoming a spicy pillow.

At least the Switch 2 has measures in place to limit charging up to 90%, hopefully it means that by the next console I won't have to swap another battery.

Nintendo confirmed that the self-serviceable version of the Switch 2 will be released exclusively for the European market. Outside the EU, this revision will not be available; all other regions will continue to receive models with glued batteries.
That is very backwards of Nintendo.

Everyone thought Apple would keep the USB-C iPhones for the PAL (EUR/AUS) market only, but they made it the standard.

If Nintendo releases a Switch 2 with replaceable battery and OLED screen I'll pre order as soon as it goes up.

It's still something, tbh definitely worth importing from another country, and i feel like it'll just be a first step for future hardware to have the same setup globally. After all the reason why switch 2 is like this is because it was already developed by 2023 likely before any of these laws had come in place, so they're not gonna stop producing all the parts they have ready..
