it will be disc based (100% sure) as no-one has really broken the Cubes disc system properly.
Nintendo's popularity in the gaming market has been on and off for years (since the days of the N64) but if there next handheld isnt backwards compatible with all GameBoy/GameBoy Color/GameBoy Advance titles.......then that will be the blow that kills them, or it will atleast kill them as handheld developers.

Ace, did you buy the GBA because it played GBC games??? I didn't and I'm sure I wasn't the only one. Not being brave enough to make the leap is what will kill them. They learned it the hard way with the N64.

About the emu, I was going to defend Lord Graga, but figured who better to do that than himself. I didn't doubt you when you said it. Most will still want more proof. You've opened the floodgates on yourself my friend.

That certainly plays like one. Of course, those who would have their mouths shut by such proof will fall back on the argument that it will never be done at full speed.

actually I bought my GBA because we were going somewhere for a coupel weks and I needed something to entertain me on the long driv there (but yes I did think of all the variebles) I could have bought a GBC, but I wanted to be able to play the new games and the old.....Nintendo has this HUGE GameBoy/Color/Advance game library and if they switch to discs they'll be abandoning that........I WONT be impressed. I just want them to find a way to play N64 Quality games (or higher) on carts and have it backwards compatible with every other GB/C/A cart (they've already sort of figured that out with the iQue player now all they have to do is get that to work on a Handheld system), the way I picture the next generation GameBoy is like this....... 3-D graphics, bigger screen, uses carts (probably slightly bigger, maybe expanding them to around the same size as the old GameBoy carts would work?), backward compatiblity with all old GB/C/A games, has the same basic design as the GBASP, has 2 extra buttons (X and Y, like the SNES controller) and the other stuff you'd expect from a next gen handheld.....

That's where we disagree. They need to trash the carts. If they don't, they could end up eating Sony's dust once again. To try and include them both, coud inflate the cost of the unit, which will be another key factor-price. You would have them throw everything but the kitchen sink into a unit that would probably end up being bigger than the GameGear and retailing for more than what people think the PSP will.

I can appreciate wanting it to be backward compatible with the GBA games, but I'd rather see the next system make a giant leap, like the PSP is shaping up to be. Cartridges are far too limiting.

you dont understand.........if the Nintendo switches to a Handheld that uses discs, that'll put them on even ground with the PSP, making it impossible for them to win the handheld wars.......the companys are already flocking to the PSP Nintendo will stand no chance if they dont have the huge game library to back-up there handheld. It will be like N64 VS PS1 all over again......

I do understand and don't agree. The worst decision you can make in business is to stand still while companies pass you by through greater innovation and more risk-taking. Besides, they don't have to win. They own almost 100% market share. In addition, Sony will be looking only to enter the market and carve a small niche, and likely will not be targeting the same audience. It is the perfect time for Nintendo to take the leap, while it is sitting right on top.

I think they will move to a disc based system, if only because of size limitations with ROM chips, but I do believe the next Nintendo Consoles will be backwards compatible, if N have learned anything it is that BW compatibility = more money.

and I did buy my GBA because it was BW compatible.

What if they solve the probleme with a totally new support?
I mean, what about a support like the MD?

In that case, they could put Disk-like support in a cadridge, which mean that the next GB will be retrocompatible.

That wouldn't be too expensive either, but the probleme could be the security....
Everyone could make a programme just to transfert rom on a disk (like the MDs do....)

And, i got another question:
What about the Save hardware?
Are they gonna let us buy memory card to put in our handeld?
This is fully crazy!

And, as far as i now, a Simple CD can't be writed only for save....

So,there are some possibility:
_ They put a mini HD in their handheld(!?)
_ They make a rewritable support (that mean a easily pirated support to me...)

Im still sticking by what I said, if Nintendo doesnt stick to what they know the PSP will kick there @$$ from here to the moon. Sony Almost killed them off twice (N64 vs PS1, and GC vs PS2) but each time they've just barely scraped through (im still not sure how GameCube got so popular lately when it was almost dead before). A good part of the reason people buy systems these days is because there backwards compatible with the older games of the same brand name. If Sony lost that edge they would probably suffer big time, but if Nintendo did with thre next handheld? there wouldnt be enough left of them to make them a 3rd party developer.

How did Sony get there in the first place though---by taking the leap and going with CDs in a cartridge led market. Every once in awhile, difficult decisions need to be made. Nintendo needs to do it soon, and I think now is the best time.

Still, you keep thinking Sony is directly competing with them, when it is highly likely they will not. They're just wanting to get their foot in the door, and everyone else who has tried to take Nintendo head on in that field has died a miserable death, even with superior hardware. They haven't formulated their marketing strategy yet, but if they add everything they're saying they're going to, they probably won't be targeting the same audience.

oh they'll be more then directly competing with them, when the PS1 first came around all the good developers went over to it, and not to mention SOny's gaming consoles are aimed at ALL ages, while the majority of Nintendo's games are aimed at just kids (not all of them, but the majority).

So, you think a 300-400 dollar handheld is in direct competition with a 100-200 handheld? What planet do you live on? I'd like to live there where economies of scale do not exist. Not everyone can afford the behemoth on the horizon from Sony. Target Audience. Some are bigger than others.

you forget something.......this thing wre discussion is a hypothetical discussion about if Nintendo had a disc playing handheld, and if they did it would roughly be priced around the same as the PSP.

Sorry Ace, you left that discussion awhile back with all of your high priced extraneous demands. You really left it if you think those two systems will ever be similarly priced as well. Nintendo is going to have to add a whole lot, leaving their target audience by the way, just to get anywhere near what Sony is throwing around.

what high priced demands? all I want is a SLIGHTLY bigger screen (well okay... I want the screen size of the Tapwave Zodiac) and 2 extra buttons, and MAYBE 3-D grapihcs, they could leave everything else the way it is. (i'd settle for jsut the buttons and the screen size thing though).

Ive always figured that PSP will take a hgue chunk out of nintendo's handheld market (if not all of it) but if Nintendo starts screwing with what they know they'll lose everything, also you do know that if Nintendo doesnt make there next handheld use carts.....that it will infact be the death of emulatino as we know it.

So. You know what I did before I found out about GBATemp? Hmm...let me see, I believe I actually paid for my games, which is what we're supposed to do. It won't hurt my feelings to pay for a system capable of running Nintendo 64 quality games or better. However, you're also going to need a better storage media for those as well. Cartridges just won't cut it. So, you need to figure out what you want, what you really want, and send your list of demands to Nintendo. I'm sure their design and marketing teams will rest easier at night.
