Hello everyone, I need a bit of help getting my Wii U to load successfully from an external USB drive. I have a Japanese Wii U on 5.5.2-J and have successfully installed CBHC v1.6. I am trying to use WUP Installer GX2 to install games on my external USB drive, however, though they install fine, when I go to launch the games, they get as far as the splash screen and hang, forcing a reset of my system.

My first thought was that I was using WUP files from the wrong region, however, everything I have read has said that CBHC is region free. Similarly, I thought that maybe there was a problem with the files, however, they install correctly and I have tried three games, all with the same result of a splash screen hang.

I am completely out of ideas so any help anyone can give me would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks for reading.

You selected the option "System Menu" in CBHC? Else please post any photo or text of the error

As @Pokezuculento says, you have to be autobooting to CFW for region free.

Tap the home button when you see text on your gamepad during coldboot. When you see the CBHC config menu make certain that autoboot option is set to system menu. Then you will be in CFW mode on boot and region free should work.

Hi, thanks for the help. My WiiU is set to Autoboot: System Menu. To see if it made a difference I hit 'home' on startup and manually selected 'System Menu'. I get the same error - the game's splash screen appears, music plays for a few seconds and then nothing more happens. Below is the settings and the splash screen that is as far as I can get right now.

Is only with the Captain Toad game?

Maybe the problem is the downloader or the ticket. Wich program have you used to download them?
I'm not sure what you mean by downloader, I used WUP Installer GX2. The disc images themselves I sourced online as my WiiU game collection is in the UK and I'm in Japan.

You extracted the games from your discs or downloaded from any program like NUSGrabber, WiiUSBHelper, UtikDownloader...?

I did not use my discs (they are in England, I am in Japan and I'd like to play my Japanese-bought games in English), but downloaded the files online, they were supposedly already prepared for use (containing files ending in .app, .h3 and title.cert, title.tik and title.tmd). I did not use NUSGrabber, WiiUSBHelper or UtikDownloader.

Have you tried to download a Japanese version of the game from the same source and install? Also, download a game using USB Helper and test it, I read in another tutorial that anything not from USB helper might have problems.

You should try using a simple Wii U downloader program like FunKiiU and grab some JPN games from there, extremely fast download speeds and the games work fine 99.99% of the time.

Hope this helps.
