Homebrew steam chatter?

would it be possible to make a steam chat application? i know theres a msn one. i would just like to talk to my steam friends when im away from a computer. steam is all i use for chat, i dont use aim, etc.

just wondering, im sure it would be a popular app if someone made it.

I don't believe it is yet possible.

Steam desperately needs 3rd party support, but the developers are not interested in helping. Some early attempts suggested the protocol as similar to the msn client, but I'm pretty sure this has been ruled false. Any knowledge on this would be priceless to the steam community, although they're not willing to admit it!
