Gaming Splatoon 2 Amiibo question

My son has Splatoon 2 and has put tons of hours into it. He wants to add the Fresh Fish Mask with the Octoling Octopus Amiibo but can’t for the life of him figure it out. I know nothing about the game. He desperately wants this gear, but there’s something he isn’t doing to get it.

Can anyone walk us through what he needs to do, or suggest what he’s not doing?

Go into the switch settings menu, Amiibo, Reset Amiibo to clear data out.

Then in Splatoon 2, go to the amiibo box and it will tell you it isn't registered, re-register it and then at next scan you should get the Head.
