Hacking Sony?

Sony dvd-r are on sale at best buy this week for 50 for $12. I thought I'd pick them up since my Memorex dvd+r are completely unreliable. So are sonys good? I hate getting DRE!

I use a lot of Sony discs.
Sony DVD-Rs made in Malaysia with manufacturer ID Sony16D1 have never failed me.

Of course you can't tell the manufacturer ID when you buy but you can see where's it made.

i use verbatim never had 1 problem with them. and no matter what disc you use always burn at 4x!

Ha Ha i use the cheapest discs i can find and burn at 6x and out of 100 discs i have had 8 fails/non boots/disc read error

Mitsubishi is the manufacturer of Intenso's discs but there might be others. I've had Compusa discs that were made by Sony while the guide lists only Princo, UME Disc, AML, and Optodisc as Compusa's manufacturers.

Unless someone has had past experience (as you are looking for), you won't know until you've used dvd identifier/burned a few discs.

Made in Japan is usually a good sign.

I have tons of Intenso, and when I did get a error it was caused by damaged ISO. Intenso's are good.

Myself I never had any problem with my 7¢ DVD-R Hanah Montana burn a 16x.

The digitalfaq website is an excellent source (IMO) for blank DVD quality statistics. I found their assessments to be pretty accurate as they have mirrored my experiences with different brands/manufacturers over the years. Best advice is to check the manufacturer code on one of the blank DVDs once you get them home and check the list on digitalfaq to see what you actually ended up with. As mentioned, anything with a 'made in japan' label is typically good. Anything with 'made in taiwan' I would check on the list as those DVDs can vary wildly in quality.
