Sega was at Comic Con to showcase their attempt to revive the classic Sonic style with Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode 1. The game is being released in several parts and will be a digitally distributed game. An interview was conducted by Gamespot at Comic Con and it showcases a lot of gameplay footage on how it plays. Have a look, the video is almost 10 minutes and gives a lot of insight about the gameplay-

On a personal note, the speed looks less like it's trying to be Sonic Rush now, but if you're trying to compare it to classic Sonic, you'll see that the physics seem stiffer. They still seem to be having some issues programming the loops and slopes, and even the springs. It seems that the homing attack can sometimes get in the way of your platforming, i've noticed numerous missed jumps and the player is constantly getting hit by enemies and spikes just due to a mis-timed air dash that was intended to home onto something.

I don't know what to think at this time, but i've heard some scathing criticism from both GoNintendo and several reputable members on this site who have tried the development builds. The physics are described as broken. Hopefully the extra time they've delayed the game with will mean it will keep on being improved. It looks like a good game, but it has some issues from what i can see. I don't expect them to create a game that will perfectly emulate the classic style anyways.

Episode 1 was recently delayed until "late 2010", citing that they were going to take extra time polishing the game to meet fan expectations with the physics. What exactly that means i have no idea, considering the fanbase is so divided and at war about the series (one group wants classic Sonic, the other wants new Sonic physics). We'll see how the extra development time works out for them. The game will be coming to the downloadable services of Wii, Xbox 360, PS3, and even iPhone. They may or may not release it on other systems such as PC or 3DS, only time will tell. Hopefully it turns out to be great, and at least they're trying to listen to fans and not rush the game out to satisfy sales.

Because it was TERRIBLE before. I surprised they're so focused with quality, to be honest. Having played a previous build of the game, looking at this they've made SWEEPING changes to the physics system. This is much better, but still needs cleaning up for sure. I'm glad they're improving it, I had my money betting on them releasing it in that sloppy state given SEGA's history.

Did you not read the topic at all? They claim they pushed the release back because of fan reaction. They wanted to put more polish on the game and make sure they satisfy the fans when it comes to gameplay. I think it's useless considering how divided the Sonic fanbase is (you can't please them all no matter what you do), but there's your answer. And i am glad that they're listening. Remember Sonic 06? The literal reason that game sucked was because the business men at Sega forced the developers to release it early. FAR too early in fact, i believe the SEGA developers had said something about it not even being half finished or something...

So i'm glad they delayed it. I don't want an unfinished buggy ass game. And i hope you don't either. It sends the message to Sega that fans are ok with mediocrity or crap. And that's how they've gotten so screwed in terms of the fanbase.

And BTW, Spikey is the one who i was talking about from this site that said early builds sucked. I'm glad he sees some major improvement. That's extremely good news to me, it shows that the delays are definitely working in our favor. Late 2010 should give them plenty of time to cook some more. [IMG]

Looking at this video, it seems they have made a fair amount of progress with the physics improvements. Though as far as the music goes, I wish they had more midi-ish rock kinda feel going for it. But that's just me nitpicking. [IMG]

Well even though he said it, I didn't see any bonus stage giant rings at the end of any act even with 50 plus rings...

Has anybody thought what a Sonic game would be like, using Sonic's gameplay from Brawl... I think I'd find it quite good IMO...

At a glance, it does seem to have improved a little, I saw someone playing the leaked build on livestream and we unanimously agreed it was a bad game at the time.

It has a ways to go to the honest, to be honest the homing attack is a crutch and the game would play better if it were optional, but unfortunately it's been demonstrated that you'll often have to combo enemies to reach areas.

The game will probably also still have that dreadful soundtrack that leaked long ago, but it will at least have the dreaded minecart stage removed, only to be found on the iPhone, along with the lesser mentioned pinball stage. For those who don't know, Act 2 of Casino Night Zone is just grinding 100,000 points, it's awful.

Grinding wasn't in the original games was it...? I know they're allowed to bring some other Sonic elements into this game, but this to me doesn't really feel like classic Sonic... More like Sonic Rush which isn't a bad thing, but they more felt like seperate gameplay to me...

Yes, that grinding level was terrible... I tried to block the memory of it out... I only got to 15,000 before I gave up on it...

    The game looks great!

Too bad they ruined the video with all of that pesky talking.

As far as the air dashing, are you sure that isn't just user stupidity? It seemed kind of like the person playing wasn't really that great at the game. I mean...doing the dash while there are plainly obviously spikes right in front of your face is probably not a smart move. [IMG]

Yeah, the bozo playing it seemed very homing-attack-happy, which threw him off in some ways.

I'm very glad they're taking their time and listening to reactions. Hopefully they'll tweak and tune it to be an excellent game.

    Hopefully... [IMG]

I'm not liking this homing attack thing AT ALL. The dude keeps talking about old school Sonic mechanics, but WHERE in old school 2D Sonic games was there a homing attack? It was fine in Sonic Adventure, where it was obviously introduced to offset the imprecise jumping mechanics with the move to 3D, but it's just not necessary in 2D.

In fact, I think it just takes away from the game. When Sonic comes out of the jumps, he's vulnerable (rather than spinning, like in the previous 2D games) and you have to use the homing jumps to kill anything. The boss encounter they showed emphasizes my dislike of it; the player isn't even jumping toward Robotnik, but rather jumping straight in the air and using the homing mechanic for the attacks.

There's no skill involved in that whatsoever and this is just pandering to people who don't have the skill or patience to play games. If someone sucks that bad that they can't even play the game, let them go collect stamps or something. Seriously.

This looks promising, i have every sonic game (even a part of Sonic Xtreme on the Sega Saturn [IMG] ) so i'll be getting this one as well ^^

The homing attack isn't that bad, I mean they need to make some changes and in Sonic 3/sonic&knuckle you could do an air dash as super/hyper sonic or with the fire shield as well. Although it wasn't a homing attack it was quite nice imo.

Anyways, cant wait til its out!!!

Of course Sega has to listen to the fans if they want sales for the game. This is practically the last straw for Sega to prove themselves worthy, at least in my opinion. Sonic became a disastrous series since after SAB2(in my opinion again) so lets all hope they'll be able to turn the whole thing around with this one.

Unless they give a collection of Genesis games for the DS/3DS, they won't make it very long.
