Today at SXSW Gaming, SEGA have announced what previous rumours have speculated - Sonic Mania Plus is coming this Summer 2018 as a physical release with an exclusive 32-page art book.

Sonic Mania Plus will feature 2 new playable characters - Mighty (last playable appearance in Knuckles' Chaotix (1995)) & Ray (last playable appearance in the arcade title SegaSonic the Hedgehog (1993)).

Features:

• Mighty the Armadillo & Ray the flying squirrel as playable characters
• Holographic slip cover
• Reversible Genesis/Mega-Drive style cover art
• New "Encore" game-mode
• 4-player competition mode
• Exclusive 32-page art book

Sonic Mania Plus will release this summer for $29.99.

I don’t believe it will be console-exclusive because it would be dumb move to not give a popular game to a major part of the community.

It's nice to finally have a physical copy of Sonic Mania out. The addition of Mighty and Ray honestly make me wonder if they're going to bring back more older Sonic characters that have been left out of the limelight of late and phase them back into prominence. That would honestly be very cool.

this is supposed to be classic 2d sonic games.
amy though, well, yah i could see her in the game rocking her classic design but have a modified version of her advance 1 moveset.

Shadow isn't a classic character so that's that and Amy who cares the this only other time Ray the squirrel has been in a game playable since Segasonic The Hedgehog

I didn't know there was a rule for classic 2d sonic games never getting modern characters. Why the Amy hate? lol They could have very well add them all to the game.

They better, because tight now I'm pissed off if I have to now buy the physical too. And if I DO end up buying the cart version on Switch, I'll just buy it in Oregon where there's no tax, and then use my 10% off Walmart discount on it, as a further "Fuck you" for selling me the game twice.

Mhhh... Could take it or leave it. Love the idea of the art book and reversible Genesis cover. Also cool that Ray finally returns!! Looking forward to seeing their special abilities and stuff, but I know a lot of people wanted a totally new game announced, myself included, though this soon it does make sense it isn't. I wish they'd at least add some new levels. Will probably get this if it comes to PC.

Weirdly, the rumors of a new Sonic racing game were proven correct, but in the livestream they said "this is not a sequel to any other Sonic Racing games" so it's not Sonic R 2 or All Star Racing 3. But afaik Sumo Digital (SASR devs) will be working on this new game, as claimed by Eurogamer.
