Today at SXSW Gaming, SEGA have announced what previous rumours have speculated - Sonic Mania Plus is coming this Summer 2018 as a physical release with an exclusive 32-page art book.

Sonic Mania Plus will feature 2 new playable characters - Mighty (last playable appearance in Knuckles' Chaotix (1995)) & Ray (last playable appearance in the arcade title SegaSonic the Hedgehog (1993)).

Features:

• Mighty the Armadillo & Ray the flying squirrel as playable characters
• Holographic slip cover
• Reversible Genesis/Mega-Drive style cover art
• New "Encore" game-mode
• 4-player competition mode
• Exclusive 32-page art book

Sonic Mania Plus will release this summer for $29.99.

I do wonder how much these characters can add gameplay wise. Sure it's good fan service, but the level designs are already finalised and there was no obvious secret paths that could be exclusive to them. I guess Mighty will feature some kind of rolling attack and Ray will likely glide (which makes more sense than an echidna gliding)? Amy's gameplay in Sonic Advance 1 was actually decent and added a unique challenge to the game. I hope they take cues from that somehow.

Everything says "physical release" or "physical edition". The collector's edition they released originally was technically a physical release as well. Just with a game code instead of a disc.
