The latest issue of Nintendo Power confirmed the release of Sonic Generations and Shinobi on the 3DS[/p]

Sonic Generations looks pretty fun. I probably will purchase it. I can't comment on Shinobi, though as I haven't played any games from that series.

It is pretty obvious that it is for the DS.

Right above the huge "SONIC GENERATIONS"

It reads:
QUOTE
The Blue Blur speeds onto Nintendo 3DS in an anniversary event 20 years in the making

EDIT: My bad. You were talking about Shinobi. There is no confirmation that Shinobi will be for the 3DS, but seeing as MM: Legends and Sonic Generations is on the cover, I can assume it will be released on the 3DS also.

  • It's in a list with Megaman Legends (a 3DS-exclusive game)
  • It's a Nintendo magazine so there are only three possible platforms (Wii, 3DS and DS). The DS and Wii are consoles/handhelds that are getting phased out so it makes sense to assume it's for the 3DS.
The list says classic revivals. And the Wii still has a year to go before it's successor comes out.
It can very well be for the Wii.

Edit: Okay, you got me with the third point.

The question here is whether Sonic Generations 3DS will be a port of the 360/PS3 version. The HD version uses the "Hedgehog Engine" which powered Sonic Unleashed and gave that incredible sense of speed. Or whether SEGA will just hire Dimps and gimp the game for the 3DS market (perhaps pull a Sonic Rush/Colors DS and just make it 2D and nothing like the console at all. Wii got a totally different version of Unleashed made by Dimps and it was considerably different (and not as good).

I figure 3DS can probably pump out some really great visuals that replicate the style at least, but i'm curious as to whether it's the same engine. I really want to see some screenshots, hoping scans are made soon of the NP article (if any screens are in there).

I kind of liked the Sonic DS games......they werent bad, but they werent great either. (Atleast compared to the awesome GBA ones)

No idea how they plan to make this game play, but if they include a Portable Chao Garden, im sold

It won't use the same engine, I'm sure the 3DS can't take it.

It may have either a toned down version of the engine or a built from the ground engine specifically made for the 3DS to use with future games.

Either way, it has to be 2D and 3D since it's what the title is based on. What would they make if not, just change the characters? I don't think Sega is that stupid.

I'm curious about the engine actually. Capcom got their MT Framework engine running on 3DS with some major tweaks and even got the RE5 demo running, a feat they claimed could not be done on Wii. I wonder if SEGA managed to get the Hedgehog engine modded enough to run on 3DS.

In the pessimistic side of things, this could possible be JUST a classic Sonic game and only 2D. As in not even have the modern 3D Sonic bits at all. We really can't say anything about it yet until we've got shots/videos. Sonic Colors was made on the DS with the Rush engine, anything's possible here. The NP cover art doesn't have modern Sonic on it...

I felt the Colors engine on Wii was very well done and a decent substitute for the Hedgehog engine. Would be neat if they could port the game to that engine and put it on 3DS. We'll see.

I'll definitely getting this.

So, I got this issue in the mail today (subscribed last year during Amazon's 5$ sale) and here are the things everybody wants to know:

*Classic Sonic is the same as he is in the console versions, that is similar to the Genesis versions with a platforming emphasis. NP says it's more faithfully "old school" then Sonic 4 was, especially in regards to the physics. The 3D is used in this mode, but only modestly.

*Modern Sonic is different from the console versions and is more similar to Sonic Rush/Sonic Colors DS with an emphasis on speed. The 3D is used a lot more in this mode, such as with the first boss (Giant Fist) going towards you. Sonic will also be able to move between the background foreground.

*The Bosses are all unique to the 3DS version.

*There will be some unique stages on the 3DS version - Casino Night Zone and more to be revealed later.

*There will be "Special Challenges" that can be unlocked via StreetPass and/or Play Coins

*There will be a local wireless racing game

Sounds pretty good to me, I'll probably pick it up unless it gets bad reviews.

EDIT: They also confirm Shinobi for the 3DS, but don't say much about it other then that it will be a 2.5D side scroller.

Can the 3DS run perfectly RE5 or just a version of that on the console? Remember that the Wii can also run Black Ops but can't run the Black Ops of PC/PS3/360.

Bah, I don't believe Capcom with his shit about MT Framework on Wii.

1º We have Framework MT Lite.
2º Capcom and many companies hate the Wii.
3º Epic says they can't port UE to 3DS, but Ubi Soft did. Heck, they even ported UE 2.x to the GCN/Wii.

Because Epic doesn't want an older version of their engine to be used in their games. For them if it can't run UE 3, it can't run UE.

However. Here's all the screens for Sonic Generations shown in the magazine. Credit to the uploader.

Looking pretty good. Specially for them being probably early screens, extracted from not great quality scans and not to mention all the 3DS games look much better in motion.

And here are Shinobi screens.

I want to get both. I'll get Generations for sure.
